It is with great sadness, that we have to acknowledge that Basie Maartens passed away on 18th July, aged 86. He was the first Professional Hunter registered in the former SWA in 1964.
He was more than just a friend and colleague and fellow ethical hunter for many of the previous generations of NAPHA members.
He was also President of the SWA Hunting Guide and Prof. Hunter's Association (later NAPHA) in the early 80's. One of his famous sentences was - "how can you claim to be a conservationist, if you are not a hunter". Also his 12 commandments for Professional Hunters are widely known.
Before Independence he moved to South Africa, was a founding member of IPHA and President of PHASA in the early 90's.
In 2006 he completed his book "The last Safari" - which unfortunately is not available anymore.
