Can someone advise me if I can bring along my own ammo ( 40 rounds) to use in a firearm supplied by the South African PH ? Do I require import forms from the SA Government?

I was in a camp and met some guys who came in who did just that, so at least at that time, it could be done. I do not require what if any permit was required to do this. I would contact Henry @riflepermits.com to get the low down on this.

It looks like it can be done if this sentence from SAPS is to be believed.

An application by a person that is a non SA citizen and not the holder of a permanent residence permit for a temporary, in-transit or export import permit in respect of a firearm or ammunition not licenced under the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No 60 of 2000), must in terms of the Act, submitted on a SAPS 520

Why bother with your own ammo? If you are renting a firearm the outfitter should have the ammo that his rifle shoots accurately and will be sighted in for that ammo. If you bring your own you might need to shoot a box of it to get the rifle sighted in for it.

The reason to takes your own ammo has several good answeres. First you may wish to use a bulet that the outfitter does not have readily available. Perhaps a TTSX. Second is cost. If your a reloader and it costs you $1/rd and its $5/rd in Africa some would consider doing that. Also many PH's would be happy to have a box of shells left when the hunt ends. Bruce

I would like to take my own ammo as I have a connection to SAKO Ammo, and have seen the positive results from using the SAKO Hammerhead bullets. The brass is probably the best their is and I know the PH would appreciate me leaving the spent brass along with unused ammo. I am fine with using the firearm available by the PH as it too is a quality 30/06.

Good, High end ammo is hard to get in Africa.... if you can it's outrageous. If it's legal to tote your own, do it & leave what you don't use. The PH will appreciate!

not sure what you classify as high end....you can get it but yeah it can be pricey. just got some norma ph in .500 jeff at the shop i use in lusaka. they have norma, sako, hornady and a german make that loads for the bigger cals. think i saw box of 600 nitro, but def 500 nitro, 500 jeff , 470, 458 win/lott, 416 rigby/rem and most things down to .22lr and 17hmr......used to be bad but things are better ...i mean you can even get 2 ply toilet paper here in zambia these days......;)

By law, you are not permitted to have any ammunition in your possession if you do not have a license for such caliber, so in short, if you want to bring your own ammo, you should still do the SAP 520, you'll have to declare it at the police desk.
Then you might as well bring your rifle.

Hey @spike.t I was thinking of bringing ammo only to Zambia in August, would you happen to know the regulations for importing ammo into Zambia?
Thanks

Yes you'll need import forms. It is a major procedure, just buy it there.

hi will check it out for you. we never had it before. out of interest why? if you bringing the ammo here why not the rifle as well? as @SS Pro Safaris said above for sa , if its doable here it will still involve a visitors permit with specified amount of rounds and calibre....could be wrong but have a feeling you cant just bring in ammo without a firearm....but will check and let you know asap

Thanks for that, on my previous trips to SA I always brought my own firearms but this time I will be using the outfitters rifle, just thought it would help out if I brought ammo and left it there. No real problem if it can't be done and from what you were saying I could buy ammo in Lusaka.

also you have to remember even if you can bring just ammo in the visitors permit is $200.00 and you pay approx $2.00 per round tax on arrival to customs at the airport......you have to have a zambian firearms licence to buy ammo here.
