So here is my recent itemized bill to get my crate cleared into the US from Zim. THIS DOES NT INCLUDE MY CRATE SHIPPING FROM ZIM, which was approx $2,200.
The airline fees (Qatar) were apparently added in with no recourse. I did pay an import service and those fees are outlined. I could have saved the ground shipping fee (Inland Freight) by picking up crate myself and taking to the tannery but due to work, it wasn't feasible this time although I have done it in the past. In short, the airline found a way to hit me again.

Also sadly, I'm not surprised. That storage fee though...did you have it stored for a while before it was picked up or is that their arbitrary "standard" fee?

My agent explained that the airline gives you 48 hrs free but you are dependent on when US Customs can get to the crates and with the back log....it appears the crate sat with the airlines for approx 4 days but I never saw the actual timeline.

It's just the unknown of worldwide hunting and it's usually unpleasant. Looking at those charges, you didn't get the elevator.

Wow! That's $3,522 total including your crate shipping from Zim. Did the crate from Zim contain any completed mounts or will taxidermy costs be another expense? I'm only asking because I have a PG hunt coming up in June and am budgeting for it. Thanks!

I actually get the Africa costs. I don't like them, but we are a limited clientele with minimal competitive options. The one that frosts me the most is importing a Euro from Europe. I can go on line right now and find a red stag Euro mount on a plaque, buy it, and have it shipped directly to me. No importer is required, Fish and Wildlife doesn't care, and it will go regular post. Total shipping cost maybe 50 or 60 dollars. That I find infuriating as I go through he expensive drill of having Sika and Chamois euro's "imported."

Sadly, no completed taxidermy in those costs. All dip and pack. I think you can get better shipping rates from SA though but the costs have surely gone up in the past 2 years bc of Covid and reduced airlines willing to ship hunting "trophies". I tried explaining these were culls to no avail Taxidermy costs don't bother me too much as my taxidermist is sleeping with my wife.

That’s disappointing to hear. I may (big may) have an opportunity to hunt the eastern side of the Black Forest. The invitation may be just talk but if it happens it would be nice to bring Euros back. Sounds like that could be an issue.

Of course you can ”bring” them back. Just like a euro from anywhere else in the world - through an importer.

But I agree, it is silly. You can walk into an antique shop In Salzburg, buy a couple of roe deer skulls on plaques, and the shop will be happy to ship to your house.

Right, I should’ve said the cost could be an issue.
And he did say he hadn’t brought back anything the other times he’d gone because of the cost. I guess it just didn’t register at the time that it was that costly…probably because the invitation itself was still ringing in my ears.

We are no better off in Canada, probably worse off. My crate arrived in Toronto last May, horns, capes and backskins, after waiting almost three years from the time of the hunt. In Canada the only place that you can import certain species into the country is through Toronto, CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) and Canada Customs. I'm surprised that the Canadian Border Security didn't need a passport to let them in to the country. Then to top it all off Canada Customs charged me for 7 days warehouse storage due to a shortage of officers caused by Covid protocols and believe it or not, staff shortage due to officers booking off for vacation. But the kind hearted souls said that they weren't charging Goods and Services Tax on the storage charge. Such nice guys!

Yep I think that probably caused delays in my crate getting picked up by US Customs. Whatcha gonna do ??

The baboon puts another “ monkey wrench” in the equation, I believe they must go to USDA facility before being released.

Baboon may also need a CITES permit to transfer through South Africa, not sure about that though.

My Tanzanian animals from last June just got to my taxidermist last week. Shipping/insurance was $1402. Landed in San Francisco I think it was. Waited a week due to a shortage of people to do one of the inspections. Then sent to Portland for final clearance and then shipped to Salmon Id. The clearance, storage and shipping to Id was another $1160. Could of been worse I suppose....
