I have found this on GI https://www.gunsinternational.com/g...ler-jeffery-r22409-quot-.cfm?gun_id=101990242

By the looks of it its an old Jeffery barrel on a rem 30 action. I never knew they did this and I never knew WJ Jeffery went to Palos Verdes!!! Has anyone seen this rifle or can shed a little light on it? Maybe @Red Leg might know a little more about it? I have sent the seller a message for more information but in the meantime and help would be splendid as always.

It would be especially interesting to know when this weapon was built.

As for the Jeffery name, to me they are different companies, and the well know retailer Jeffery is not W.J.Jeffery & Co in London, nor is it W.Jeffery & Son in Plymouth. All of these companies were in very different cities from the UK and because of this it is not exclude that W.Jeffery & Son also had a establishment in Palos Verdes.

Just came across this bit of info.

William Jeffery was active at 15 Borough, Farnham from 1839 to 1844 and moved from Surrey to Plymouth in about 1849, when he purchased a gun making business from John Harvey of Exeter. From 1849-54 his business was at 10 Lockyer Terrace, Plymouth and then at 52 Union Terrace from 1855-62. By the 1864 census it had moved to 12 George Street, Plymouth. He was personally active until 1869 (an example of a William Jeffery percussion pistol dating from about 1860 is held in the Museum Victoria in Melbourne, Australia).

From 1869 until at least 1917 the business was trading as W Jeffery & Son. That name and the George Street address are included in the book 'Experts on Guns and Shooting' by G. T. Teasdale-Buckell published in 1900, which also mentions that the current W Jeffery had been apprenticed to his father.

In 1933 Percy Jeffery of 4 Headland Park, Plymouth (trading as W Jeffery & Son, gun and cartridge makers) took a lease from an F J Coles of a 'shop, etc. at 3 Russell Street for £100 per annum'. This could possibly have been the renewal of an existing lease as the business is believed to have been at that address since at least 1928, and possibly since 1917.

In about 1966 the business changed its name to A R & H V Jeffery and was operating from premises at 15 Old Town Street, Plymouth (which became part of the Drake Circus Shopping Centre development in the early 1970s) and then from 19/21 Old Town Street from about 1976 to 1982.

No mention of a place in Palos Verdes

That is a strange looking rifle. Various British gunmakers used the P14/P17 action for sporting rifles between the wars. On all of those that I have seen, the action has been substantially reworked - particularly the safety. This one has been left pure Remington model 30. It has the appearance of a strange combination (and not an unattractive one) resulting from gluing the front end of a British express rifle to Remington 30.

Below is a .318 of mine built by Cogswell & Harrison between the wars on a P14 action and has the more typical look when the P14 is used by a British gunmaker.

A number of British houses did not long survive WWII. The Jeffery name (like Rigby) was bartered about and was purchased by an American investment group around 2000. @spike.t Mike could likely confirm this, but I think Paul Roberts produced some rifles with the Jefferey name subsequently to that.

This rifle clearly dates to the American ownership period. It would be interesting to know where this rifle was assembled and whether Paul used the P14/17 action in the Remington 30 form for any of his rifles. If so, it would be a splendid thing to own.

@Red Leg your right about Paul Roberts. I know him but not as well as @spike.t
That 500 Jeffery is tempting but Im not too sure about it, last thing I want to do is go through the hassle and expense of importing the rifle to the UK only to find its a heap of impala dung Lets see what the seller has to say.

The action is famously stout as hell. I have no doubt that it could be a great rifle. The engraving alone would be easily a 3K investment. The cross bolts are done in a best gun style as well. Will be very curious to see if anything comes of your query.

Lets see what happens. I have a feeling the rifle has sold and its still on GI as many are that have been sold

Paul basically sorted out buying the Jeffery name for Tom friedkin....when he did the deal friedkin said OK you can use it to build rifles....my 9.3x74r double I used to have (favourite rifle ever) was a Jeffery built by Paul....then friedkin suddenly gave the rights to use the name to someone in usa and they are building the rifles now.....and expensive ...that's the rough story from memory, and could be wrong in parts as was a while ago....

And you have had a few drinks since then. But buy the sounds of it thats about right. Mr Friedkin behaved like a twat! I have a feeling this rifle has been sold as the seller hasnt got back to me yet and its mid afternoon in Houston.
Seems to be the story of my life at the moment I find a nice rifle that isnt for sale or just isnt there

The sellers have got back to me. Unfortunately they have no idea on the date. But they did say it's a very professional marriage of action and barrel. They have sent me some more pics and tbh it's an interesting rifle

Mate the Remington 30 snd 30s are nothing but M17 enfields left over from war time manufacturing at Remington. The parts were put to use making the 30 and 30s, the grand parents of the 700 but with a crf action.

As an update I have chosen not to go with the rifle. Although its a nice marriage of an old barrel and action as I cant get my hand on the rifle (unless I take a trip to the USA) and the fact the seller cant tell me to much about it I would rather dip out.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
