An illegal hunter was killed and four others barely escaped when they were attacked by two lions on a game farm earlier this week.

The incident occurred at just after 21:00 on Wednesday evening when the five hunters from the Namakgale area near Phalaborwa set out with their dogs on an illegal hunt.

Three of the men escaped by climbing into a tree. According to reports two of the hunting dogs were also killed. The four hunters who survived the attack have not yet been arrested.

Provincial SAPS spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, confirmed the incident and said that an inquest docket has been opened. It is unclear at this stage how many dogs were used but no firearms were found.

The nefarious plans of a group of poachers turned deadly this week — but not in the way one might expect.

The poachers were thwarted by a pair of fearsome "locals" who were none too pleased to have hunters in their midst. One poacher, identified as 24-year-old Matome Mahlale, was mauled to death by lions while attempting to carry out the illegal hunt on a game farm in South Africa, police say. The four others members of Mahlale's hunting party were forced to flee for their lives after the big cats attacked.

"They came across two lions," police spokesperson Ronel Otto told Eyewitness News. "Three men managed to climb into a tree and the other one managed to escape."

Sadly, two dogs forced to accompany the hunting party were also killed.

It's unclear what type of animals the illegal hunters had intended to target, or if they would have been caught by authorities for the crime, what with skyrocketing poaching rates in South Africa.

This isn't the first time an attempt at poaching wildlife has resulted in the tables being so swiftly turned. In 2010, officials in nearby Kruger National Park discovered the remains of a poacher who had been devoured by lions shortly after being chased and injured by a group of hippos. In that case, two of his accomplices lived to tell the tale.

hope the lion didn't break a nail , when it scratched the dead dude ...................:D:D

Kinda like a burglar, rapist, etc... Being killed at the scene of/before the crime....

I love how they use the term "illegal hunter", why not use "poacher". I know it's semantics but it makes it look like another story meant to instigate hatred towards hunters.

Glad to hear. One down, but a whole lot more to go.

Perhaps all game farms need a couple of security lions.;)

CECIL'S REVENGE ! ......the movie coming to a theatre near you LOL .

i couldn't agree more with the poacher vs illegal hunter comments, its like a rapist vs illegal love maker

Shame the lions couldn't get up the tree and finish off the others

Ahhhhh...too bad! Good for the bastards

PETA should be screaming from the roof tops about these poor unfortunate dogs. Killed by lions and eaten like scraps. Shame on the owners of this farm.

"Lions should be kept on a leash and not allowed to attack poor defenseless dogs at night. Oh the humanity of it all." Exclaimed a PETA spokesperson !

Where are the tree huggers and PETA when you need them to stand up and protect the poor animals. I guess the dead man was just a poor local man looking for something to eat.

Sadly, two dogs forced to accompany the hunting party were also killed.
.................. .

Abducted from their meager kennels in the middle the night these brave canine lads were coerced into chasing their friends the hapless antelope.

One canine source was quoted as saying "We never thought to ask what kind of cat they wanted us to chase."

Sparky and Spot will be sorely missed by their litter mates.

im surprised the antis havent started singing the praise of the lions for killing the poacher as just another hunter even though they know the difference.
