Looking for a photo safari. I ama hunter, but want a photo safari for family. Kruger? Suggestions? How to get from airport in Johannesburg to Kruger? Anyone ever rented a car and driven to or driven through Kruger?

Thank You !

My first thought is a hunting safari company near Kruger or Madikwe. Hunt a couple of days and let them get you to the parks for a couple of days. A lot of safari companies have family friendly services where they take the wife and kids to game parks while dad hunts. There's no reason they can't take dad to the game park too.

Welcome to the site. My 2 sisters and I did just what you ask last summer 2021. Completed a 21 day multi area hunt with outfitter, then dropped off at Port Elizabeth, rented a car, cheap high slung regular car, not 4x4, in dry/winter season normal car is perfect, in 20 days we drove 6000 KM on our own. Car all in for 20 days different pick up and drop off points with unlimited KM, 2 drivers, all insurance including tire, glass and normal totalled $1100 cnd. Shark cage dive in Gansbaai, penguins at Boulders beach, Cape of good hope, Addo park, mnt horseback trail rides and many smaller tourist sites along routes then finally drove to Kruger and spent 4 nights in Rondoval's within park. Dropped car at Joberg airport and flew home.

I would most definitely recommend this to anyone, in 4 days self driving and self catered locked in nightly within Kruger park we saw the full big 5 and dangerous 7, all VERY close (like feet away), 100+ buffalo caused us shock and awe as they moseyed across the rd all around us, also painted dogs, hyena, honey badger, cheetah, birds and all PG game (some made the hunter in me drool at their size). We stayed in Lower Sabi and planned on adding and signing up for a photo safari, and night drive while in park, but when we experienced all on our own we saved those extra dollars. All was organised and booked by me before we left Canada, only nights on road between main attractions were booked on the fly, using cell phone on route. With internet things seam very easy, SanParks was outstanding, replied fast, proper answers and as their site stated had my guns Park locked and accompanied me. Prices were extremely reasonable for self catered places, camps and outings. Lower Sabi has all amenities, dam good food/dinning all while wildlife makes noises on other side of concrete wall. Restaurant even had spotlights for free use while eating, we always got the wall table. Think hippos, hyenas and crocs at mere feet away while you enjoy supper and bats flying around.

Things can be expensive (for me) if you want royal treatment, pampered or someone to do leg work for you, we camp, road trip at home and wanted same experience while in Africa. I see no reason to pay daily rates for a company to do what I organised and did for 1/10 the cost all from couch in Canada prior to trip.

Never once did we ever feel scared, worried or threatened, people, food, driving, freeway rds are same as at home, smaller side rds watch for massive unexpected pot holes and off course right hand drive but easy to master and no special licence for Canadians at least. Our whole self catered trip was safe and outstanding.

I did learn that those blue flashing lights on police cars mean you are speeding, they do not chase you just flash lights, getting the 7 speeding tickets sent to me after returning to Canada was a $150 unexpected bonus gesture. But not fake as we were speeding, I will learn to slow to 120km for next time. 140km = tickets.

Hope you get the idea from my post that it is totally doable for anyone who is not afraid to research, investigate and book, just do it. PM/DM me if you want specifics, more than happy to help.

PS I did same in Zim, Hwange and Vic Falls. Not scary dangerous but not SA.

Contact any of the supporting Ph’s on here in the area you wish to visit-they will have favorites/connections for you and can likely serve as a guide if you wish. There are lots of game reserves to visit. I’ve been to pumba in the east cape but more famous addo is in that area as well as about 6 others. They all vary in cost and services, depends specifically what you are looking for

While Kruger is great and a not miss., You should really look at Chobe and greater Victoria Falls. In Chobe, there is a boat you can take where telephoto lens are mounted on a boat for taking photos of the elephants crossing the river each evening.

If your just doing a photo safari I suggest East Africa, Mara and Serengeti, best authentic photo safari location in Africa. I have also visited Kruger and most of the parks in Southern Africa, Zambia south. You just cant beat the aithentic Africa feel of East Africa. Just my Humble Opinion.

I have no skin in this game but @Spear Safaris has private land bordering Kruger that is just used for photographic safaris. They may tell you more once they see they are tagged

It probably depends on what animals you and your family want to see. I just got back from South Africa and started off with a photo Safari for my wife before I began hunting. We stayed in Toro Yaka Bush Lodge in the Batule Game Reserve (Greater Kruger National Park). I liked it because they provide two game drives daily. I don’t know what your budget is or how many family members you plan to take but the downside is that could be expensive.

Toro Yaka was remote, safe, and you didn’t have to compete with cars to see animals like you do if you’re driving yourself on the public roads in Kruger. We saw a large variety of animals but my wife expected to see cheetah not knowing we were on the wrong part of the continent for that specific animal. Here’s their Facebook page, to give you an idea of the place and the animals you may see: https://m.facebook.com/toroyaka/

Hi Sir,

If you're looking to do photographic safaris in Tanzania, PM me and I can work out an itinerary for you.

Best,

Mubarak

My favorite photo safari was to the Masai Mara region of Kenya. Saw all of the big 5 and was just an excellent "Glamping" experience. We went a few weeks ahead of the great migration, so the price was a bit more reasonable and the camps weren't crowded.

Chobe in Botwana and Vic Falls in Zambia/Zimbabwe was a good trip too and easy to combine all this into a one week trip.

For both trips, we used a Cape Town based travel agent that had every single detail worked out. All transportation, border crossings, etc. PM me if you would like more details.

Hi Takemelord, I've sent you a DM as well!!

Thanks in advance!

Good day, let us know how we can assist!

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
