Hunting with a 7x64

I’ve got a sweet little Ruger 77 in 7x64 and want to hunt with it badly. Problem is there are so many others that are in line to be blooded first. I ended up with the rifle because I got a great deal on brass in 7x64, then scored on a bunch of Norma ammo, next step was to find a gun to shoot it! Lovely round and sounds much cooler than the 280 Remmy! Lol

@clockwork_7mm_gator one of my local gun shops has a Heym 30 straight pull with a couple boxes of ammo with it for sale at a good price. let me know if you want the contact information.

This is my 7x64, having taken an old scruffy bull eland with it. One shot, ran only 25m.

Ahem. There is *nothing* cooler than the 280 Rem... (in spite of Remington's best efforts to botch it's rollout multiple times!)

Hoping to draw blood with this one:

I had a very nice custom some years ago that I used extensively. I punched paper with 160-grain Sierras and used 160-grain A-Frames on game. I shot red hartebeest, kudu, impala, springbuck, gemsbuck and blesbuck with mine. It worked just fine. I just prefer the '06, however. Just me!

Slightly off topic but had the chance to fire a 9.3x62 with that stock design but standard forend.
What a bitch of a thing.
Even holding it into the shoulder and a nice comfortable cheek weld the bastard of a thing came back and belted me straight up the chops. What a prick of a design.
Even my Whelen with good 310gn loads doesn't belt like that price.
Give me the Savage 110 stock any day.

I have two 7x64 rifles currently, a Sako M85 Bavarian set up for longer range open country hunting with a big scope and quick adjust elevation turret. Killed some deer with it, and like it a lot. It is very accurate and puts 160 grain bullets downrange at 2880 fps with low recoil. The other is a Mannlicher-Schönauer made in the last year of production 1968, model GK I believe, full stock carbine with traditional claw mount and double set triggers. It too is very accurate, but I haven't hunted with it yet. It is at a gunsmith getting a custom scope mount adapter made for the claw mount so I can replace the vintage scope, and the double set triggers replaced with a custom single trigger that can also use the tang safety. I'm impatient to have it back and in my hands and take it hunting.
Previously I had a really nice Brno 21H 7x64 that I had extensively upgraded, but sold that one. Took a really big bodied local bull elk with it, and some other deer too. I'm a fan of the 7x64.

This is the elk I took with mine...

Been a big fan for years. Currently have a Steyr M72 that I have been playing with for a while. Good shooter.
Never hunted with one but took an elk with a .280 Rem many years ago, for all intents and purposes, the same round, different name.

I have a 7x64. It's a S&W 1500. I traded for it sometime last year. I spent a fair amount of time researching to find more info about it with no luck. I did find an old S&W catalog on the interweb with that model rifle in it but it didn't shed any light on it. According to that catalog S&W didn't chamber the 1500 in 7x64 but this one is and I have the original box with the label showing it as a factory 7x64. The gun was made by Howa for S&W back in the early 80's but S&W only catalogued and imported them for a couple of years. I reached out to two different importers that imported Howa made rifles for S&W but neither could tell me anything. Howa didn't have any records that were helpful either. Apparently I have a unicorn.

I don't care how unique it is I'm still going to hunt with it. Another forum member here sold me an as new B&C stock for it. It's pretty cool because anything that fits a Howa/Weatherby Vanguard rifle will also fit this rifle. I plan to hunt whitetail deer with it this year. Sorry, no pic handy.

As a side note, the rifle I traded for it was an M70 XTR Featherweight 7x57. Even though I'm very satisfied with the trade I've spent the last year or so trying to replace the M70 7x57 and I was finally successful about a month ago. I came across one LNIB from 1984. It's exactly the same as the one I traded except this one has a walnut stock where the one I traded had the laminated WinTuff stock. I paid a premium to purchase it but as far as I can tell it wasn't out of line with the going rate. Besides, I ain't getting any younger. I figured I'd better buy it because no telling when I'd see another one.

Thank you clockwork_7mm_gator.

Bob Nelson 35 Whelen, I almost bought a 9.3x62 in the same configuration but, a friend wanted it so I passed.

Longwalker: That's a fine elk and good looking dog! The Brno will ever be a classic but, I have a fascination with Mannlicher-Schoenauers and 7x64 would be a nice companion to my .30'06. :)

Good Morning x84958
I have read your post about Jamy Traut and your hunt in Caprivi. I am planning such a hunt for 2026, Oct with Jamy.
Just a question , because I will combine Caprivi and Panorama for PG, is the daily rate the same the week long, I mean the one for Caprivi or when in Panorama it will be a PG rate ?
thank you and congrats for your story.
Best regards
Philippe from France
