Waterbuck are an iconic African antelope and an underrated trophy. They are one of the few antelope species that can be considered bulk grazers and fill a vital role in the African landscape.

Nice trophy

Nice trophy.
What did it measure-- hard to tell with all the people seated way behind the horns.

Yes, it was a big hunting group. Not all on the stalk though thankfully. We didn’t measure it, estimate 27-28 inches. We typically hunt 27-32 inch waterbuck.

Gorgeous. I love how their hair has different colour and texture. If I was hunting Africa for the first time as a client, waterbuck would be in my top 3. Best mount though.

This is one of the best we ever shot. The hunter had just finished his spiral slam a day early. We were waiting for my guys to skin his eland and we decided to take a last drive. Out pops a small waterbuck bull, 50 yards behind him in thick brush I just saw the tips of this ones horns. I knew he was special. I told the hunter it would be a once in a lifetime trophy. It turned into quite a hunt, he almost got away but the client never hesitated. If he’d turned it down, I wouldn’t have! Not often theres a correlation between your favourite stalk and your best trophy you guided someone on - in this case it was though.

I would really like a mature waterbuck.

One came to a waterhole I was hunting over, but it wasn't quite big enough.

I spent about 30 minutes watching him through the scope, hoping he would magically grow about 6-10 more inches.

He didn't, so I watched him walk away.

I have not seen one since...

Booked with Harold Grinde - Gana River - they sure kill some good ones - who'd you get set up with?
