Looking for input on loading/shooting HORNADY DGX bullets in .500 NITRO EXPRESS for HEYM 88B SAFARI.

I’m tagging this as my 375 ruger this is the absolute only thing available unless I reload
which I am currently not doing

I can speak to the .375 Ruger, I’ve had excellent performance on animals as small as bushbuck and warthog up to elephant and buffalo. The elephant was a collaboration to the brain so who knows how that went but one buffalo took the 300 grain DGX to the left shoulder and was recovered under the skin of the right shoulder. The bull almost went down on impact and he turned straight away, I then stuck a 300 grain DGS up the rear and it was recovered in the dewlap. Shot a couple of “meat“ buffalo but wasn’t around for the skinning so can’t speak to the performance except for dead buffalo.

This is good news, because 10 years ago my safari partners father shot two dugga boys in the omey Zimbabwe and lost both of them , a expensive loss for sure and a major conflict in camp with the PH ( that’s a story in itself)
both he and Chad ( son ) are uptight I didn’t go 375H&H due to the only hornday factor with a ruger

Just because I'm a touch anal, are we chatting about DGX and/or DGX Bonded?

Interest in both bullets for me! Thanks for the inputs on the 375 Ruger and aforementioned bullets. I’ve had great results with their ELD-X line of bullets. Just wondered about the experiences with this line especially with the 50 caliber for the 500 NE.

I have had satisfactory performance with the Hornady DGX ammo on buffalo with the .375 Ruger, .416 Rigby and .404 Jeffery. Also the DGS in the .404 on elephant.

I prefer Swift A-Frames which are loaded for all of the above but the .404 by Swift.

I used them in both my 500 DRs with great success. Please do not listen to people talk about the old DGX before Hornady recreated them in bonded form. The ones before bonded form had instances of failure which you can find on our forum and were very real. The new Bonded Hornady DGX are great with no problems whatsoever. Buffalo example for me with great penetration and expansion just as they are supposed to do.

Glad to hear they fixed the problem. I was one of the ones nearly burned by their original design.

I reluctantly used BONDED DGX in my Westley Richards .450-400 last June for Cape Buffalo. I felt better about them after corresponding with Doctari. He was right.

Perfect expansion and good weight retention. I would use them again without hesitation in my classic doubles.

In a modern double I would still prefer TSX or A-Frame.

I know you were…I remember your horror story about it but did not want to name your past experience without your permission. My research did confirm yours and so many others experience did get them to change to the bonded DSX. To your point, I would just make sure I was shooting the bonded bullets which clearly communicates that on both their loaded ammo plus their bullets for reloading

I took a shot at a sable in Mozambique with a 300 grain DGX, on the way to the sable I hit a tree first. The bullet still flew straight and killed the sable. Entrance hole was about the size of a nickel as was the exit. This was roughly at about 50yd.

Picture of the tree I hit before it hit the sable.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)
