I’m planning a duck hunt for late this season. Has anyone hunted with this outfitter?

Never hunted with them but spent 40-50 days a year in the area back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. If you hit the weather right expect some great hunting. The area is really dependent on the white-fronted goose hunting and it’s not as weather dependent as the ducks and snow geese. The weather I’m speaking of is mostly wind.

So windy is better or worse??

A 10-15 mile an hour wind is ideal, stronger it can be REALLY good. Are y’all going for ducks, geese or for whatever offers the best opportunity?

Either or. We don’t get a lot of Specs up here in Missouri so that would be fun. Mallards are our game of choice but Pintails, Widgeon or Teal will do!

In the time I was there we killed some mallards, lots of pintail, and teal with widgeon and gadwall thrown in to spice things up and if someone wanted a mottled duck we would make a special plan for them. Some years earlier in the season we would kill a few whistling ducks, both fulvous and blackbellied. The way blackbellied populations have exploded around the southeast I would think they kill more now. I was based out of Guydan.

If anyone knows of a good waterfowl guide/outfitter in Cameron or Calcasieu parish, please chime in.

I’ve hunted at Hackberry Rod & Gun Club. They were very good.

I have hunted a few times at Doug's Hunting lodge located near Gueydan, not too far from Lake Arthur. It was very good and I believe a friend of mine still goes there.
Much of the duck hunting is very weather dependent--warm weather might not be the best for your hunt.
I will try to get you more information.

Doug’s is where I was, I haven’t had any contact with them since maybe 2000, I would guess that the guys I worked with are retired or not with us anymore. When I left they were really starting to get into the corporate type of hunt with massive groups and that just wasn’t my cup of tea so to speak.

I was last there in 2014 and didn't think it was bad. I believe his daughter may run it not sure. I tried calling someone to get more info and couldn't get him--he lives on Lake Arthur.

I haven't been with Hackberry Rod and gun in years--had a good fishing report from Mark Biggerstaff on this board a few months back. There is a place near Lake Charles that might be a bit upscale--Grosse Savanne Lodge. I have no personal experience with them.

I remember Doug’s daughter Rochell, when they would over book the lodge they would send people over to her place for lodging.
At one time Doug’s motto was “we don’t shoot no deaux Gris” referring to an old article in Wildfowl magazine about Hackberry were they shot only lesser scaup in the article. Not 100% sure if it was meant in fun or not and I couldn’t get the truth out of Doug or my old friend Rick Hall.

Funny, I called them earlier today! Awaiting a call back from the hunting guy there.

These guys have a solid rep. They hunt my old country. Typically mixed bags of a bit of everything. We always passed on spoonies.

I’ll pass spoonies until late January. Then they color up so much that they are one of our targets. Drakes, that is. We call them “boot lipped mallards”. Grosse Savanne south of Lake Charles hunts ducks. Should be good. I know it has to be the top bass fishing anywhere in the world. Our group took 30 teal last weekend on Choke Canyon in South Texas. Bonus for the dove hunting

I checked the website for Grosse Savanne. Their rate is $1,000/day including lodging and meals. That’s a bit pricey for me.

Have just driven by (and eaten at the big boat launch/park/pavilion area). Only noticed quite the petroleum sheen in the water... ;) You may wish to pre-soak in Dawn. lol If the birds combust upon impact, I'd consider that more honorable/entertaining that tannerite...

Funny! We call them Hollywood mallards. Drakes with the big smile!

I called a friend asking about good places to hunt in the marsh and he mentioned that a lot of the areas a bone dry. You may want to take that into consideration. I imagine that rice field hunting might be an option, depending on how they get their water.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
