Welcome to AH! Watch out for the “404 J” virus spreading out on this forum. There is no vaccine or test developed for it. Thanks God!

Hello Bigmedcin,

Khomas Highland Hunting Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

Your 9.3x62 Mauser will serve you extremely well in Africa, for 99% of the game species.
It’s a little light for hippo on land and for elephant.
Nonetheless, with a 286 gr flat nose or round nose solid, fired into the right spot, likely your 9.3 will even do an excellent job on those two.

For all the rest, it is a near perfect cartridge and rifle combination.
Ammunition for it is fairly common for sale in Namibia and South Africa, probably other African countries as well.

When you get a spare moment, have a look into the Khomas Safaris web site.

Best Regards,
Velo Dog.

I didn't think 9.3x62 was legal for dangerous game in South Africa?

Welcome from a fellow Canadian. Where about’s in Canada are you from? There is lots of great info and people on this forum. I see you have been warned about 404J syndrome but what is more contagious is just called “big bore addiction”! I was getting symptoms before I went to Africa but got a bad case when I got home, l now have a 416 and a 450 caliber rifle. So far no symptoms of Double Rifle disease.

There is a very long string on this topic, but bottom line it’s province by province in RSA as I understand it.

Welcome to AH! Hang around here enough and you’ll be planning that first trip soon enough.

I didn’t say it was or was not legal for dangerous game in South Africa.

But, if recommending the 9.3x62 as an Africa worthy caliber is a Bozo No-No, I’m quite guilty.

I surrender, lock me up in the nearest circus tent.:ROFLMAO:

Each person planning to wander away from their familiar surroundings, (especially to another country), needs to check the laws and cultural quirks, well in advance.

My Best Regards.
