Hi Everyone...I just joined this forum and really enjoy the discussions about the different calibers used and advice on which calibers to use.

My two favorite calibers are the .270 Winchester and the 9.3 x 62mm Mauser. These are the two calibers I used in Africa in year September, 2003. I was on two hunts on this one trip to Africa. The two countries were Zimbabwe and South Africa near Port Elizabeth. I was able to take animals from the Dik Dik up to Eland and Kudu with the .270 Winchester. The only animal I messed up on was a big Water Buk....I shot him a wee bit too low...a 2nd shot took care of this problem. All other .270 shots were decisive and no problems. I've used the .270 for sixty years and have killed game from the top of the world(Yukon) to the bottom of the world(Africa) and the ,270 has never failed me. However, for big and dangerous animals I will use the 9.3 x 62 Mauser.

The 9.3 x 62 Mauser was my favorite as it killed four cape buffalo with one shot each. I have read that no one has ever been able to notice that the .375 H&H has shown any superiority over the 9.3. With 66 grains of Big Game powder I am getting 2500 fps +/-. Three other hunters took their buffalo with my 9.3. One shot for each for all four of us using my 9.3 x 62 Mauser.

I look forward to reading all of the questions and comments here. I am a US citizen and live in the south eastern State of Tennessee. I am now 70 years old and will probably not be able to come back to beautiful Africa. I can't afford it anymore. However, I've noticed that I can afford things if I am motivated enough.

Best wishes to all

Welcome to AH Roatmtn.
9,3 x 62 is my favorite caliber.
Hello... I am always hunting for articles and stories about the 9.3 Mauser. I have never been able to understand why it took almost 100 years for this old cartridge to become popular in the U.S.A. I hope that you are able to hunt wiyh and enjoy this very powerful cartridge. Best wishes roatmtn

Welcome to AH.
Hello to you up in Canada. I hunted Canada(Yukon) back in the 1970's. The .270 Winchester killed a moose and grizzly with one shot. Question. What caliber do you feel is most used in Canada. .303 Britt, 30-06, .308, 6.5 x 55, 9.3 Mauser, what? hope to hear your opinion. roatmtn.

Welcome aboard Roatmtn. You come well seasoned, wish you would have found us sooner. Your "love" for the 9.3 x 62 is shared by many and understood by most if not all of the members here. I don't own one myself, but I have several 35 Whelens which I consider a kissing cousin. We are all just a bunch of "good ole boys" so chime in whenever you feel the urge.

Hello...You are 100% right about the .35 Whelen. This cartridge is also almost an identical twin to the great .350 Rigby from England. I have read John Taylors African Rifles & Cartridges in which he praises the .350 Rigby very highly when used on game up to and including elephant. He used 225 gr expanding and solid bullets of very good construction from Rigby. There is very little difference between the .35 Whelen, .350 Rigby and the 9.3 x 62 Mauser. If needed, I chose the 9.3 because of ammo availability in Africa. Taylor killed EVERYTHING in Africa with the 35 caliber and praised it highly.

Hello Roatmtn,

Khomas Highland Hunting Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

I agree with you, Witold, Shootist and others in regards to the 9.3x62 Mauser caliber, the .35 Whelen and .350 Rigby (rimless and flanged both, LoL).
Perfect calibers for what most of us can afford to hunt in most of what Africa has to offer these days.

Cheers,
Velo Dog.

Yes! I doubt if any creature could ever notice the difference between these three cartridges. Dead is dead...period!

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks

hi, do you know about lions hunters, leopard hunters, and crocodiles hunters of years 1930s-1950s
I'm new to Africa Hunting. I would like to purchase a Heym 450-400 double rifle. I'm left-handed but would prefer a non-canted gun. Is anyone in the community considering parting with theirs?
