Hats on safari

I know Rands comes to DSC. Do they sell hats there or just take orders? Assuming I liked a style there, would they be able to fit it to me? I have a goofy shaped head I guess, and generic hats don’t fit me well.

They take orders only. They take measurements of your head and make a custom hat for you, so a goofy shaped head would be no problem. I like their hats, so I have multiples for different occasions.

They do have some available if you’re lucky enough to find one in your size

Have a look at these. I’ve one and it’s very cool in the hot weather gives great shade. Has a ventilation on the back. I cut the cord off of mine. Maybe the flowers will give the ph and trackers a good laugh but they do come in other colours.

My dermatologist and I have entirely too frequent an association. Therefore, in Africa, I usually wear something with a brim. I have tried a stiff brimmed hat, which worked great while hunting, but was a pain for air travel.

This is a Barron and the same one they made for Redford's character in out of Africa. I decided the puggaree would be a bit over the top. It still finds its way to quail hunts and dove shoots, but it is too much trouble for air travel. He looked better in it.

Several years ago I discovered a cotton Tilley that is just about perfect. Have no idea the model name. However, it rolls up easily and provides great sun protection. It even has a bit of the Stewart Granger look without appearing like a sport on his first safari.

I would rather stay home than be caught wearing a pith helmet.
That Barron is a damn fine hat, sir.

My hat's off to a guy who is not afraid to be original. :D

The Tilley Airflow hat is my favorite. Lots of shade and good ventilation.

I just got a Tilley Ultralight T5 Classic and really like it. Might be my new go to hat for hot weather hunting.

No dog in this fight with acid treatments and skin cancer removal scars to prove it. I did find this interesting page in the book “Safari A Chronicle of Adventure” by Bartle Bull. Might be of interest to some of you-

looking for some advise on what hat i should bring on my first elephant hunt in Zimbabwe in mid June?
Please send pics of any hats that have worked best for you

I had great luck with these hats. Add to that, they are on blowout right now for $24. They are vented so you don't sweat so much!

I'm a tilley guy as they float and i do a lot of kayak fishing.
(pro tip: You want to make sure your rods, your drink, your shoes, and your hat float in case you dump in some rapids.)

Mine is the green lower/orange upper. Perfect for hunting for visibility in case needed for pushing deer or bird hunting.

I also like that i can cram it into my pack and not get worried about it being bent out of shape.

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe

Hi Walden. Good morning from England, Chris here (The Englishman!) from Croatia. Firstly it was a pleasure to meet you and Michelle - a fellow Sanderson! I have finally joined AH as I enjoy it very much. Glad you enjoyed the hunt and your write up which I read on AR was very good indeed. I am sending on WhatsApp pics from Bojan of some of the animals hunted recently. Take care and best regards. CS.
