Bringing a rifle into South Africa can be more than just a challenge. The hurdles that have to be overcome can make hunters frustrated and confused. However, Rifle Permits is a company that works hand-in-hand with the South African Police Services (SAPS) to provide “import/export” or “in-transit” permits for your rifle(s) before you arrive in South Africa.Prior to 2006, hunters with pre-authorised permits had to queue in line with hunters who did not yet have the necessary permits and documents. This meant that those with pre-authorised permits still had to wait in the same line as those without pre-authorised permits. Since 2006, SAPS have moved to a new, bigger office in the General Meeting Area.

This will alleviate some of the frustration. However, Rifle Permits will also hand deliver your pre-authorised permit to you on arrival and also guide you through the procedures at the SAPS Permit Office. We will also guide you through the regulations that need to be adhered to if you want a successful trip to South Africa. Some of these regulations include:

• No more than ONE firearm or shotgun per calibre or gauge, please contact us if you want to import two rifles off the same calibre, we can assist you to lodge a special application with the SA Police.
• Only 200 rounds for each permitted firearm or shotgun will be allowed.
• No ammunition for other firearms (calibre or gauge) is permitted, in other words, do not try and bring ammunition for your PH’s rifle.
• Firearms must bear the manufacturer’s serial number or any other mark by which the firearm can be identified. The identification number must be stamped and the mark affixed in the prescribed manner on the barrel, the frame or the receiver of the firearm.
• Handguns will be allowed into the country, but only for hunting purposes. Any foreign visitor wanting to bring a handgun into the country, needs to produce a letter from a registered association of his/her country of origin, stating that he/she is a registered member of the association and that the handgun will be used exclusively for hunting purposes.
