Grizzly bear official SCI boundaries?

I’m trying to find the official SCI boundaries for a Grizzly bear (not a brown bear) but when I search it seems like I have to be a member and have a login to access that information?

Does anyone here have the ability to post up the official description for Grizzlies in Alaska specifically?

I know this isn't exactly what you asked as it comes from Boone and Crockett, but I think the standard lines apply the same. It used to be simply 75 miles from shore became a grizzly, but they have re-defined it now. The website gives actual boundaries, rivers, etc. Hope this helps

No, that’s not what I want. B&C makes it easy to access their website and boundaries.

I know SCI has specific units listed in AK I wanted to verify, and it’s not the same as B&C

The SCI (Safari Club International) Record Book distinguishes between Alaska brown bears and grizzly bears based on geographic boundaries, primarily using Game Management Units in Alaska. Bears harvested in Units 1-10 and 14-18 are classified as Alaska brown bears, while those outside these units are considered grizzlies. SCI's Record Book is a comprehensive listing of big game animals, including grizzlies, and is considered a standard in the hunting community.


Back in 2004, I shot an 8 ft squared and approximately 800 lb Alaskan grizzly in GMU 13. SCI considered it a grizzly and B&C a brown bear. A very large boar in the area I hunted just outside of Denali per my guide topped out at 9 ft and 1000 lbs. Not really true interior grizzlies since they fed on salmon in addition to standard grizzly fare.

I wasn’t sure about unit 11. Looks like SCI Utes 11,13,19 as grizz where B&C puts them as browns

This was from an internet search, excerpt only and not directly photocopied from the SCI record book but at least it gives you a starting point. Honestly, I haven’t really kept abreast of where record book SCI grizzlies are being recorded presently, all based on skull size of course. I think some of the largest grizzlies at least body size will be the salmon eating ones that are further inland in Alaska. Used to be B.C. Had some massive SCI grizzlies but banned from hunting now. Good luck with your quest!

Yeah for B&C and P&Y just north of that line in that first map in Unalaska is where the top entries come from along the coast.

I thought SCI also had some criteria on distance from salt water.

Excellent suggestion! Here’s less detailed SCI map on grizzly boundaries but joining is the best suggestion yet. I need to join up again too! I can see why BC would have some large SCI grizzlies, a shame they can’t be hunted there due to their ridiculous ban.

Hi Phil, just an online search for SCI grizzly boundary map which took me to SCI’s website that shows this map. I’m guessing there are there more detailed features if one joins and becomes a member, something I need to do. I’ve been a member off and on over the years, should’ve become a lifetime member. I’ll join today!
