I have finally made the decision to hunt Africa for the first time. Coming from Australia, I am used to hunting very large areas so the small fenced areas in SA just didn't sit well with me. I'm not criticising the small hunting blocks in SA, who knows maybe one day I will even hunt one of those blocks myself but for now it's just not what I had pictured hunting Africa to be, so I have decided to hunt the BVC in Zimbabwe with Dave Langerman.
With all the research I have done I really like what I see with the BVC and also Dave Langerman. Dave is a real genuine guy and is already proving to be an absolute pleasure to deal with. The hunt is a long way off yet, will be around October of 2025 but I need to plan this far in advance because of work commitments. Have already worked through most of what I need to with Dave, just need to firm up exact dates and exact camp in the BVC, will be doing this very soon.
I am going for buffalo and warthog and have decided to go with one of their "management" bulls. The photos Dave showed me of what is considered a management bull is actually quite impressive in my opinion. Depending on what you want in a buffalo, the management bulls can still be very much considered trophy bulls in my eyes, big old worn down dugga boys with big bosses just minus the 40" spread, which doesn't mean much to me anyway. I have always pictured a real old dugga boy like that as what I wanted to hunt anyway so it works out well for me.
And warthog is also on the menu, I have been a pig hunter my whole life so I can't go all the way to Africa and not hunt a warthog or 2. At this stage I haven't really considered any other plains game but if an amazing opportunity steps out in front of me while out hunting there is a good chance I'll take that opportunity.
I'll be taking my new 450 Rigby for buffalo and my 9.3X62 for warthogs (atleast this is the plan anyway). Haven't yet decided if I will leave the 450 open sighted or mount a red dot, either way it's going to be a dream come true hunting a proper old dugga boy with a Rigby rifle. I shoot with irons pretty well and have hunted buffalo here in Australia with irons very successfully so I might just leave the rifle the way it us but either way I have plenty of time to think about it.
I know this hunt is a long way off yet but I am really excited already. The only concern I have is hunting Africa may become a very expensive habit for me.
