Hunting reports
Australia/NZ
2
I have finally made the decision to hunt Africa for the first time. Coming from Australia, I am used to hunting very large areas so the small fenced areas in SA just didn't sit well with me. I'm not criticising the small hunting blocks in SA, who knows maybe one day I will even hunt one of those blocks myself but for now it's just not what I had pictured hunting Africa to be, so I have decided to hunt the BVC in Zimbabwe with Dave Langerman.

With all the research I have done I really like what I see with the BVC and also Dave Langerman. Dave is a real genuine guy and is already proving to be an absolute pleasure to deal with. The hunt is a long way off yet, will be around October of 2025 but I need to plan this far in advance because of work commitments. Have already worked through most of what I need to with Dave, just need to firm up exact dates and exact camp in the BVC, will be doing this very soon.

I am going for buffalo and warthog and have decided to go with one of their "management" bulls. The photos Dave showed me of what is considered a management bull is actually quite impressive in my opinion. Depending on what you want in a buffalo, the management bulls can still be very much considered trophy bulls in my eyes, big old worn down dugga boys with big bosses just minus the 40" spread, which doesn't mean much to me anyway. I have always pictured a real old dugga boy like that as what I wanted to hunt anyway so it works out well for me.

And warthog is also on the menu, I have been a pig hunter my whole life so I can't go all the way to Africa and not hunt a warthog or 2. At this stage I haven't really considered any other plains game but if an amazing opportunity steps out in front of me while out hunting there is a good chance I'll take that opportunity.

I'll be taking my new 450 Rigby for buffalo and my 9.3X62 for warthogs (atleast this is the plan anyway). Haven't yet decided if I will leave the 450 open sighted or mount a red dot, either way it's going to be a dream come true hunting a proper old dugga boy with a Rigby rifle. I shoot with irons pretty well and have hunted buffalo here in Australia with irons very successfully so I might just leave the rifle the way it us but either way I have plenty of time to think about it.

I know this hunt is a long way off yet but I am really excited already. The only concern I have is hunting Africa may become a very expensive habit for me.

Congratulations! Looking forward to the report!

wonderful! congratulations on going on a hunt of a lifetime!!!

Sounds like a wonderful trip for you! I have not hunted Cape Buffalo, but I have taken 7 Warthogs. I could do a Warthog trip, and take nothing else! Good luck to you!

Congratulations, what a dream hunt to look forward to!!

You know the difference between a management buffalo and a trophy buffalo?

Not a damn thing. Not for me anyways.

100% agree, when Dave told me about this option and sent me 5 or 6 photos of what they consider a management bull I was sold! Those bulls are exactly what I am looking for.

Congrats @Aussie_Hunter! You're in for a real treat and as @Flipper Dude so aptly stated, a buffalo hunt is, well, all about the hunt! Any properly taken buffalo is a trophy in and of itself. I love the combo of your two rifle battery and the thought of taking an old dugga boy with open sights is most appealing. Late afternoon and dark shadows could be problematic, but you have great experience with water buffalo and know your limitations, so its definitely doable. As already mentioned, you have plenty of time and multiple options so I'm certain you will make the right decision. Good luck and looking forward to AHF being part of your journey.

Yeah I shot a bull on dark on the second last day of a hunt in 2022, man that front bead was hard to see, mind you I could have just painted the front bead white, it would have made a big difference but obviously a red dot would have made a big difference too.

Thanks I love the 9.3X62 and 450 Rigby combo as well, my 2 favourite big game cartridges.

Congrats on booking your first. Forget 40" being some kind of magic number. What you are describing as management bulls are actually the REAL trophies among buff hunters. Old, worn down tips, less spread but more character...that's a genuine trophy, not a young wide bull that still has sharp tips and a wider spread. This example would be a trophy of a lifetime.

Congratulations on pulling the trigger on this hunt and good luck.

Warthogs are cool!

Yep that bull fits right in with the examples he sent me.

Hunting buffalo = hunting kudu. Put your sights on one of those. Very challenging.
