Harare, Zimbabwe - Zimbabwean authorities say an elephant has trampled a German tourist while she was trying to take photos of it.

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority spokesman Tinashe Farawo says the woman died of her injuries hours after the trampling on Wednesday in Mana Pools National Park.

Farawo says the 49-year-old was in a group of tourists who encountered a herd of elephants upon entering the park.

The spokesman says that "we are always asking people to stay away from wild animals; they should keep a safe distance."

Killings of locals and tourists by wild animals are common in the southern African nation, where wildlife authorities constantly struggle to contain potential contact between humans and animals.

Wild animals are dangerous. Makes you wonder how much pressure the guides must be under to get people in close for that picture. (tip)

I don't know the details, it is just sad news.

I'm actually surprised that more don't get sliced, diced and mashed by the local wildlife.

About the dumbest question I ever heard asked Is, " does the dog bite" and the dumbest answer, "no". Unless it has no teeth at all, they all bite.

I guess pepper spray doesn't work on everything?

I read in one article "it's not clear how the woman provoked the elephant into charging".

Bloody urbanites believe in this utopian world where only carnivores kill and only when they really have to.

I was just outside of Mana pools and a recent video was making its rounds of a young bull ele walking right up to their lunch and playing with a guy with his trunk.

It was only a matter of time all the Zim guys said.

Very unfortunate.

Here in the states, Yellowstone park, has it's fair share of fatalities, and mishaps. Tourists don't understand that it is not a petting zoo, and walking into an animals comfort zone, can ruin the day.

As I have said before on this forum. If I ever take a park tour to take pics, I am not leaving the confines of the truck.......Period!

This one!

Damn, the gene pool almost had a cleansing.

Dumbo, Simba, Baloo,Winnie and the like, are sooo adorable and cute. Right up to the point where reality exists. Then they are deadly animals. Heck , even domesticated dogs are known to turn on their owner’s. At times there’s a fine line between how cute an animal looks from a distance, and it’s potential to be deadly close up. Also, when you get close up to a wild beast that looks beautiful from a distance; one starts to distinguish the gory details of it actually being a wild animal. It’s kinda like the attractive woman that walks in a room, but if you get close enough you sometimes see the imperfections. Reality and image can be at two ends of the spectrum. Lol

several years ago while i was in africa a women was killed by a lion, she had the window down to take close up pictures in a drive thru park and the lion just reached in the window and chewed on her. she died, large signs (DO NOT GET OUT OF YOUR CAR-KEEP WINDOWS UP)

People don't seem to understand that they are intruding in the animal's space and some animals take offense. Observation--at a distance--is fine but don't get too close. Even in a vehicle one is not totally safe. A vehicle makes a great play toy for a rhino or ele to toss around.

Then after the intrusion the animal is deemed a threat and destroyed through no fault of it's own, just the stupidity of ignorant humans.

Don't get me wrong. I am a hunter, in the right time and place, which excludes taunting wild animals for a few snapshots. People usually deserve what they get in such situations. I have no sympathy for them. As the old saying goes, "Ya pays ya money and ya takes ya chances."

If you enter the red circle of the dangerous 7 you will almost certainly be attacked and probably killed. You can also do that unintentionally, like my friend did, and the lioness killed him all the same. The exception amongst the seven is the croc, he will seek you out, come into your circle and kill you there. I have also lost two friends to him. When one talks about African DG it is a very real opponent you have chosen, be prepared not only in terms of your equipment, but also study the animal's behaviour.

I'm a photographer. I have photographed wildlife from time to time, nothing as dangerous as an elephant or lion but creatures that will still put the hurt on you if things go south.

One fall I was in Rocky Mountain Park when the elk were in rut. It was amazing, both the scenery, the wildlife and the collection of morons. I was using a 400mm lens which gave me quite a bit of distance but at one location where I'd been set up awhile, a couple bulls had moved closer and when several car loads of people showed up. They went tromping out, closing the distance on the elk, obviously no regard for animals already in a frenzy from the rut. I did stay in my position thinking, "well if they're going to get mauled I'll at least get a photo of it". But evidently their guardian angel was working overtime.

I spent enough time around cattle and have seen how bad they can tear a guy up to mess with wild animals. I'd love to photograph African wildlife............. with an armed guide.

Ever been to Banff in Canada when the elk are running around town? It's a real circus watching golfers trying to shoo the elk off the greens. Guess who wins that fiasco. And all the idiots in town being chased by elk when they get too close.

What a horrible way to go.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
