I bought a bolt action .375 today and it will soon be topped with a Leupold vx6 1-6 x 24. The gun comes from the factory with open sights which have been removed but could easily be replaced. Standard or detachable rings and bases?

It sure is nice to have options.

I'd put the irons back on and go with detachable.

I like my Warned QD (quick detach) rings. The bases stay on the rifle permanently. As discussed in another thread, separating the rifles from the scopes can help to protect your scopes from the baggage monkeys in the airport.

fixed !

I honestly believe that you will not remove them during a hunt , added to this is that the VX6 1-6 , goes down to a 1 power .

they are also great scopes !

I vote with Royal27 and PHOENIX PHIL. Refit the factory sights, if you have them and go for the Warne QD ring-mounts, fitted to steel bases.

Please be advised, you need to remove the scope every so often, so that the levers can easily be worked by hand. You should always leave a drop of light machine oil on the threads.

I got a bit lazy with my Brno and the threads locked up. I put some Kroil on them (better safe than sorry) and gave the levers some gentle taps with a hardwood off-cut from a round stair handrail. It worked like a charm.

I agree with open sights along with QDs I have both on my 375HH and 404Jeff

Royal gave the perfect advice.

I'm going with detachable on mine. I think it's unlikely that I'll never have to remove it but you never know.

make me a +3 warne or tally QD and open sights! I had a Burris scope crap out on me mid hunt took it off shot the irons no problems no ruined hunt!

Personnal like leupold quick detach bases and rings have them on all my hunting rifles.

Give me the options to change scope or use iron sights.

This is the route I took on my .375, they are working well so far.

If your eyesight is like mine open sights are next to worthless. I just can't focus on three things at once since I started to get older So I would go with solid rings with the low power variable scope and practice acquiring the target through the scope so if you do have to take a quick shot it is second nature.

Tally QD's are reliable. Anything I take to Africa has QDs. On my first hunt there, I had my .338 with fixed ring scope installed (1.5 low end). My PH and I followed up the leopard I killed for about 60 yards at around 9 pm on a moonless night (dead as dead when we got to him). I would have been more effectively armed with a club. Fast forward three years and was back in Namibia with the same PH (by now a good friend) on a tourist and PG hunt with my spouse. Lost leopard on a neighboring concession. I was invited to come along while Nick brought his three terriers to try and sort it out. Three hours trailing a creased cat through very, very thick stuff. This time my .338 had a detachable scope. Fortunately we never closed on the thing, but had we, I was feeling a lot better about my potential role. I will not take a rifle to Africa with a fixed scope.

Whether you re-install iron sights or not(I would), if you use QD rings, you can bring a second scope that is sighted in for that rifle. If your first scope fails, you have a back-up. I know a few people that have done this on elk hunts.

After a burris died on me two weeks ago in Africa on my cull hunt ....I am investing in qd mounts for everything ....lucky local ammo and the Blondes 7x64 saved the day .......though she got way more animals as she had first call on the rifle ..... a lesson learned

Burris scopes are JUNK sorry to see you had one fail too! I will never buy another they cant take heavy recoil in my experience and there customer service is rude.

Damm should have told me before I left ....bugger was the young PH gave him my Zeiss scope last year off the rifle as he had just qualified ........kindness repaid I suppose ...also as the idiot I am never ever thought to take backup with me

Ohh well lesson learned

Mid-90s Burris are first class, all rated airgun, including the 6-18 AO. Filipino manufactured scopes are probably good value for use on .30-06 chambered rifles and below, when carried rather than bumped around, as happens when driving rough roads.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
