We need to hear that one for sure.I got him a few years ago, Paulina unit. He fell to my longbow at 14 yards.
I'll see what I can do. It is a good story, I will try to do it justice. We need to hear that one for sure.
Makes sense. I occasionally see a group of toms, sometimes hens and jakes, every now and then a lone tom on walkabout.IMO turkeys have places that they like to roost and will return to that area unless they are bothered with or the feed changes. That said gobblers later in the season may roam and not roost in the same areas as they are seeking hens that are not setting yet. They can be here today and gone tomorrow, but when you do find one he is a lot more killable.
Lots of fun to hunt, now only if they would pluck themselves...Nice! Turkeys are more fun to hunt than deer IMO. They can also make you scratch your head. Just when you think every turkey in the county is deaf or has a complete dossier on you and your exact whereabouts, you'll get one to put forth the effort to fly across a creek or something and surprise the heck out of you. Those lone tom's are the best.

This was my first year really turkey hunting. I have typically been too busy with work and saving my time off for deer/elk/beer/cougar hunting. Turkey may be moving up the list.
The part I found most comical is the two weeks calling and hiding in a blind, wearing camo up to my gills, seeing nothing... and I get a turkey when I am out walking around in jeans and a sweatshirt.
I blanch all my chickens when processing but didn't have a pot big enough for a 20 lb bird. I just plucked him "against the grain" it went alright, I just don't like plucking birds.Did you dunk it in boiling water?
In high school there were a few of us who were decent hunters but had the normal troubles of getting a tom to play with us. All of a sudden we're upstaged by our not so great of a hunter but seemingly very lucky friend who was on his families farm walking around in blue jeans, a carhartt and ubiquitous red and yellow chore gloves when he found a turkey more or less cowering or thinking it was invisible in the brush.
You just never know.

Agreed! But as we all know, the hunt is just the start of the work. There's nothing to like about plucking birds no matter the make.
