As it turns out they are both sufficient for whitetail. This weekend was opening weekend for deer season here in Ky and I started opening morning with the 460 with a 500gr woodleigh at approx 2400fps. It's definitely enough gun. My goal was actual field time with this rifle that most consider "untameable" and while it is a bit stiff from the bench I found it to be like most other rifles when shooting at game I didn't even notice the recoil. I gave it one brief thought, reminding myself to be sure to "snug it up good" and then I squared up the crosshairs and let it go. Needless to say there was no tracking required.
I followed that up last night with a 100yd shot with the 375H&H running the NECG ghost ring and bagged a solid Boone and Crockett doe, ha ha. Also no tracking required. So the jury is still out on what exactly what rifle I will run on this hunt but so far I'm feeling pretty confident with both. I have 2 weeks of deer season left and we can kill unlimited doe, and 1 buck so the trials will continue.

So you like to live dangerously......... :)

Have you tried firing the .460 prone? ;) Those hasty field rests can be challenging. :E Shrug::E Shrug:

Good choice on cartridges. Remember, more hunters have been injured by "undead" whitetail bucks than any other big game animals here in the lower 48. That's maybe why Elmer Keith thought the .375 H and H was a good whitetail cartridge? Ha! Ha! Ha! But, all true.

I’m taking my 416 out on a similar field trial this season. Good luck with your testing ;)
OK, but you better use a good premium 400gr bullet for penetrating into the vitals of those whitetails. And if you shoot a buck and it's down, best to pay the insurance and shoot it again. You wouldn't want an antler tine stuck in your ass from an undead buck? Just saying. Ha! Ha! Ha!

With the Capstick thread and this one, I'm feeling an inspiration for a new book....

Well there should definitely be a section on undead squirrel. If you have never picked up a squirrel you thought was dead and it wasn't I promise you would find the experience book worthy.

Never done that, but I can imagine. I did walk up on one I thought I'd killed but wasn't quite dead yet. His dying breath was used to curse me for sure.

They are quite interesting to deal with indeed. That woman on the survival show Alone figured that one out the hard way. The tend to bite savagely. Be sporting and finish them with a knife. Live dangerously and all...

With a title like that you could probably get a few words in by MS on how best to shoot a charging buck…

+1

Only time I’ve ever been mauled by something I was hunting. Traumatizing for all involved (maybe not my grandfather - he just laughed and said “give him hell boy!”).

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
