fast twist 270 Winchester

I just received my McGowen 1:8" twist .270 barrel. I will be having my gunsmith throat the rifle for the 170gr Berger EOL Elite Hunter bullet. The problem I have discovered is actually obtaining any of the Berger bullets. I have had very good success with the .284 180gr Berger VLD and I expect the 170gr .270 bullet to provide similar results. IMO bullet weights and twist rates have held back the .270 from its full potential.

No, but i hear the African antelope are very RPM sensitive. Won't a factory twist stabilize 150s??

if you are in first phases of planning for building or buying fast twist 270 win rifle, maybe you can consider rifle in similar caliber 7x64, twist rate cca 1-8.66, and using bullets up to 175 grains

150 were std in the old 270s. same twist.

I had a 1:8 made with enough freebore for the Berger 170, but am waiting for these bullets since 2020. Meanwhile I shoot the 150gr Nosler LRAB with a very good precision.
My 1:10,33 hates thes 150gr Nosler LRAB and only likes 130grainers but, as an exception, the 150gr Nosler Ballistic Tip give good groupins too.

Let me know how your project goes, I have a vintage (means I bought it a little beat up) Mark V in 270 Weatherby I was thinking of rebarreling with a faster twist also.

I seen no need for a faster twist in a 270 Win. 150g Partitions or A-Frames are lovely bullets. My 1 in 10" twist BDL in 270 gets 3000 fps with 150g Partitions from a 22" barrel. My 270 Weatherby is a different animal. I can get 3150 fps with 165g bullets. It would benefit from a 1 in 8" or a 1 in 9" twist barrel.

I have always shot 130 gr bullets in my 270 with the occasional 150 gr. But, I also tend to shoot a little lighter bullet with higher fps in that caliber range.

And that's the reality of it.

If your 1:10 Bbl. likes the 150 gr. ABLR?

... you have a 650 yd. hunting rifle.

Otherwise, it's Only ~ a 450 yd. hunting rifle.

And heavier bullets won't change that, because there is not enough case capacity to push them fast enough to make a difference.

Enter the 6.8 Western.

i am new to the forum, and im sorry to resurrect this, but my newest project is 270 win.

i had a 27" barrel made in 7 twist. the newest 277 military uses 7 twist and a 130-140 gr bullet qt 3k, so that fast of a twist is ok.....

i load 140-175 grain pills. it is a single shot, HOWEVER if a full length bolt action is used a 3.5" col i use might be useful.

my chamber is .600" throated. yes .600". i measure the bearing of each bullet type, and clearance it for .400" freebore which is my number.

caliber and a half for all of my weapons. i also use 24n41 powder. yep fast 50 bmg. even with 175 grain boolits, i have near full water capacity. im not going to publish powder loads, but it gets out a 3k in my chrono at 15 feet. i tried the slower powders reloder22, 4350, 760 and could not get enough powder in them to work. long tapering cases really loaded with 57+ grains and a 175 need slow powder. be careful working up loads.

no accuracy claims yet. im getting there.

i am bill. been loading everything since 1987. lots of wildcatting. i can never get what i need from a box.

i am always considering 270 weatherby shallow seated. may rechamber at any time lol. have dies, brass, etc on hand.

i also have 257 weatherby brass, dies, etc resized to 338/270 lol. gotta get the chamber cut long to clean up the win case cut. always thinking.

building a ar10 also lol. got a magnum BCG and getting a freebored 358WSM made in colorado soon. X shots of 358. my favorite caliber.

A standard 1 in 10 twist will stabilize most 150 grain 270 bullets but start using 160 grain or heavier and you can run into stability problems. Is it the new 6.8 Western is made to shoot 165 grain or heavier and uses a faster twist

Assasinator I have a 35 Sambar what one of the original versions of the 358WSM was called. It was my favourite cartridge but it is now my second fav. it has been superseded by a 358/338RUM all have a good length of free bore. :)
