I ordered a FAIR Safari 500 FXW over under double rifle today in 8x57JRS.

I did so at the risk of offending my Afrikaner brethren who might worry that I am turning into a rooinek. But I am not going to start wearing tweed hunting clothes nor shall I begin to eat kippers for breakfast

The FAIR Safari 500 is a good value and a friend owned one in 6.5x55mm.

I am wondering about the 8x57JRS. Would a load rated at 45000 CUP be a good idea for a Safari 500? I ask because the Safari 500 is also offered in .270, .308 and .30-06.

I have a similar model in 9.3x74r and have seen no signs of any undue pressure sensitivity. Since it’s a euro gun, I’d expect it to be fine with full tilt euro loads.

I checked Norma's reloading site and they list loads for 196 grain bullets showing 44 to 45 grains of 203b powder.

W-748 is slightly slower than Norma 203b and the Hodgdon website lists about 44 grains with a 200 grain bullet with a pressure of around 48000 CUP.

My favorite 8x57 load is 54 grains of H-4350 with a 200 grain bullet. This produces over 2500 fps at a listed pressure of 45000 CUP

So here's what I will do: I will start at the listed minimum charge of H-4350. Then I will increase the charge until I reach 2400 fps. Then I will stop.

The pressure will be much less than Norma's load and I will still have some decent velocity

With it being a double what speed it regulates at will dictate you loads. I have a verrny Caron O/U in 8x57 hrs and it shoot perfectly with privi ppu ammo. I have developed loads with 200gr accubonds and privi 196gr softs and solids. They all regulated at 2390-2410fps

Here's a photo of Tony receiving that Shaw & Hunter award at the 1970 annual EAPHA Dinner Dance. Tony Dyer, then EAPHA President and Princess (Sunny) von Auersperg presented it. I also attended the event.

Good Afternoon,
How firm are you on your Dakota 416? I am highly interested but looking at a few different guns currently.

Best,
BJ
