Ok not listing the outfitter, he's doing his best to sort this. But I just got a call saying that the export papers for my Sable are messed up The Sable was shot in Free State, but on a high fence location, about 10,000 acres. From what I understand you have to file extra paperwork for a Sable stating the it was raised, rather than wild. The outfitter told me that there is a 1960's rule in effect from when Sables were endangered in that region. Basically if you don't have the correct papers they assume it's wild free range. I think thats the problem from what I can understand. And now that export with the missing paperwork is not associated with my name as it trying to be exported. I have 2 questions. The outfitter has already offered me to give me another sable hunt and have it mounted again. This is been stressful to say the least, now my other 3 animals are in limbo waiting to see if the crate and everything need to be redone and I've already waited over a year.

1. Do you think the outfitter will be able to sort this out of do I need to forfeit the animal.
2. If the animals paperwork is not corrected will it be a black mark on my name if/when I travel back to ZA? Basically will I have trouble going back to hunt again?

Sable is protected species in Freestate.
You need a special permit to hunt sable.
There is no such thing as "wild free range" sable in the freestate.

Only reason I can see why there is a problem is that outfitter did not have the correct paperwork in place BEFORE the hunt and now the throphy cannot be exported.
Or the sable was poached.

……,.

There is nothing going to
Blow back on you. The Outfitter and PH are responsible for knowing the law and acquiring the proper permits in a timely fashion.

Has absolutely zero to do with you the client/hunter. Impossible for it to ever come back on you or hinder travels etc

Received good news, seems the outfitter was able to fix the paperwork. I'm guessing he had to pay somebody to "fix" it since thats pretty much how things work there. Lets hope my 4 mounts get here in good shape

not true on paying each other, most outfitters try and help each other out as much as we can when we can
glad he got it sorted

I think he meant he greased the wheel with a little money to get the paperwork in order to make it go away.

From what I have seen (which is not a lot] most good people need to stick together in that part of the world. It seems like most good outfitters no matter where tend to do that.

As @IvW said, SA Provinces have different hunting regulations, and some will require a permit from Hunting Conservation, in the name of the hunter, before hunting takes place, for some species which are on a limited quota.

I know how this works, as I have been through it. What is a shame, is that some outfitters will not abide by the regulations, and then problems arise.

Fortunately, in Africa, almost everything can be "fixed" somehow.

Glad you got it sorted out, can’t wait to see some pictures. I’ve had a couple of TOPS permits expire during the Covid meltdown but my export company at the time ( AHG shipping) stayed on top of it and had the permits reissued. Stressful but everything turned out fine.

Sable in the Free State require different paperwork. Your outfitter would’ve re applied with different paperwork. How he came by that is on him. I can assure you, no amount of “greasing the wheels” would have taken place. Environmental laws are strong here and there’s a definite paper trail. Never come across a situation where a payment to a DEDEA official was solicited or offered. They’re by the book.

What happened is in the middle of the hunt, the farmer offered me a deal I couldn't pass up on a nice Sable. ... Which brought it into my price range so I accepted. Being that it was mid hunt the paper wasn't filed prior. But then I think they forgot to fix that during the year I've been waiting. :( But for now I just have my mount picts to look at. Hopefully they will get here in 3 months or so. Thats what I've been told to expect.

All good and I’m sure your outfitter will fix it. The paperwork doesn’t have to be filed prior, it’s a standing permit for sable that lies with the property you hunted the sable on.
