I usually elk hunt in Chama area of New Mexico, but I am seriously considering a pack-in elk hunt in either Montana or Wyoming for 2019.

I want a horseback hunt and maybe be interested in adding a mule deer also. I have heard good things about Swan Mountain Outfitters, but would love to hear from those with experience.

I’d contact Worldwide Trophy Adventures/Cabelas TAGS program for something like that. I use Caleb Sutton. He’s booked mountain lion and elk for me and my brother. All outfitters are vetted and so forth.

I have elk hunted in Montana for about 17 years, using Rising Son Outfitters (http://www.huntinginmontana.com/ ) My most recent hunt with them was Nov 2017 when I took my son-in-law on his first big time, guided hunts out west. Report here: https://www.africahunting.com/threa...on-outfitters-in-montana-november-2017.40896/

A couple of months ago, I emailed Rising Son (Randy & Dena Petrich) to see about booking a 2019 hunt and they were completely booked up. I think you will find this pretty common with the better outfitters and you need to book about 2 years ahead. I booked a 2020 rifle hunt for late October.

PM if you have any questions or want any more details, will be happy to reply.

I found one of your hunting reports when I did a search for elk hunts, sounded like a great hunt.

Great family run operation. 18 - 20 mile horseback ride to camp and then daily rides out to the meadows. They have mule deer but not really big ones. The elk taken in camp were 270 - 350 when I hunted with them in 2012. All 7 of us had our elk within three days - and the other six hunters were all return hunters. I got mine on day 2 and passed on two younger bulls the first day.

You can always try the Gila in New Mexico, it will give you the type of hunt you are looking for.

Sorry, been away for awhile. Yes, I hunted mule deer. So several bucks - 4x4's with spread inside the ears. I didn't shoot. Guide said those are about the size they get.
