I have a friend that is looking to do a guided elk hunt in Montana or other? He has zero points toward a tag so is hoping to get one through an outfitter. Anyone have suggestions on who he should talk to?

Would he consider Idaho instead? Tags are available through outfitters as well.

That's not quite how it works in Montana. Book a hunt, maybe one or two years out. Apply for the points and then go hunt. I think there is also a group application where multiple hunters can pool their points and then the average is used. So if your friend has one point and the time he applies and he has two buddies, each with two points, the 3 man group would have 5 points, or 5/3 of a point per applicant.

I have hunted with Rising Son Outfitters in Pray, MT for over 20 years. They are outstanding!

First question is, what size of a bull is he looking for?

Utah has some very fine elk hunts on private property that a outfitter will run. They have land ower tags available for their hunts for those who want to pay. The residents have to draw these tags through Utah's CWMU program where they can hunt the property without a guide.

Colorado has the same type of deal only they call it Ranching For Wildlife.

Montana Hunting Company has a good reputation, I’ve done elk and deer hunts with them in the past. They have several ranches for elk hunts with varying prices from reasonable to high end (ie, Ted Turner’s Flying D Ranch) which is pricey but you will definitely shoot a 350”+ bull there

In Montana you can apply with a guide and buy and additional point for a total of two. The max points you can have is three. Two points is not quite a guaranteed draw but the percentage is pretty high. This is all for a general area tag. If he wants to hunt a limited entry area, he will need bonus points and still draw the general tag. I have only hunted general, so I'm not sure how many points are needed for the various limited entry areas.

If going to Idaho, where I’ve lived for the past 40 years, I cannot recommend hunting deer or elk with Boulder Creek Outfitters. If you would like particulars private mail me.

Just moving to DM. Yes, please ask your friend if he knows somebody who might be willing to support a persistent hunt in the snow.
