I am constantly monitoring the goings on in Central Africa against the day that I get to head into the jungle.
Seeing the latest news headlines of course raised my head. "Congo Ebola Outbreak"

Typically, the media use the Generic "CONGO", as geography is never really their strong suit.

The Google search:

Upon review of some research I find the "Outbreak" is in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) NOT "Congo - Brazzaville".

The actual outbreak is at Bikoro, DRC and is 360 km from Ouesso in Congo.

WHO provided some further insight:

Ebola is endemic to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. ............. The Ebola virus causes an acute, serious illness which is often fatal if untreated. The average EVD case fatality rate is around 50%. The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission.

The travel advisory for Congo has even been reduced a level recently.

Lesson re-learned, is to always get the background from several reliable sources before reaching a conclusion.

I would not go into an area where ebola was raging. That just makes sense. But rabies, as well as ebola and a range of other hemorrhagic fevers I could do without, are endemic to much of the rainforest and West Africa generally. Last year when I was in Benin they were getting over an outbreak of Lhasa Fever. If you stay away because of the presence of unpleasant diseases, you won't visit many wonderful hunting destinations.

Unless you're looking at a massive epidemic, you really don't come into contact with very many people in these places. Be smart, and all will be well.

Having said that, I always have medivac insurance!

If we believed the media reports we'd never leave our houses.

Right on brickburn
In 2014 when the Ebola was huge news I circumvented areas effected by flying Miami to London to Joburg to Windhoek to leapard hunt. Avoided quarrentine of 21 days. Family members thought I was nuts but they don’t hunt leapards

Well isn't Ebola also super hard to get? From what I read, it's transferred by eating infected animals, and through the fluid to fluid contact.

It is certainly not the flu.
