JMO, but I don’t believe it is wise for any business to become involved in any political issues. They are in business to sell, build, design, etc. to anyone interested in their business and not pick out certain people, groups or beliefs. Politics is an individual pursuit just as one’s religion. JMPO. I try not to shop anywhere a company tries to push their personal agenda on me.

All the boomer stuff is going by the wayside, golf, tennis, racquetball, etc. The local Cabela's is going down the same road as the local Dick's, offshore made clothing for U.S. made prices.

Yes Cabelas is! Everything at Cabelas used to be quality items. Not anymore! Just look at the labels where many items are made. It’s offshore junk just as everyone else is carrying. Cabelas’ thinks they can fool us with their name on it. They still have SOME good stuff, but you can’t anymore just trust the Cabelas’ name.

Dick head, and CEO, Edward Stack reported two years ago on the success of phasing out hunting merchandise. The stores did better, and he was aware of the increased sales, saying, "Nobody beats Dicks anymore". I was impressed by the confidence displayed in his statement. ......but there may be some wiggle room left......FWB

I agree. Dicks out of business in a few years. The bigger issue is what the Bass Pro buyout of Cabelas has done to Cabelas. The Bargain Caves have dwindled down to a fraction of their prior stock and much of the clothing is Bass Pro items. The changes are not positive for hunters. I am looking to online sites for more and more of my hunting purchases.

There is a possibility that Dick's is doing better now than they did when they sold firearms, you would need to obtain their financials to know for sure. But doing away with firearms didn't cut into their bottom line very much with all the other merchandise that they sell. Even if you walk into a store that also sells firearms along with clothing and other items there might be one or perhaps two customers at the gun counter and usually it is just the clerks shooting the bull standing around waiting for someone to show up.

As for Bass Pro's buying Cabela's, they should of just changed the name on all of the Cabela's stores to Bass Pro. They have done away with the higher quality clothing and hunting equipment in favor of the Red Head brand and other cheaper items. The Cabela's bargain cave disappeared over a year ago and there was a pretty good discussion on here about it. Now if there is still one in your store it is just items that they can't sell out on the floor, but then that is what a lot of what it was before. I never did really find anything in it that I was interested in but if you had a store where you could check on it each day you might of.

Cabelas isn’t trying to “fool us” - Johnny Morris, the founder of Bass Pro is trying to fool us, and I think he is screwing up. He bought Cabelas for 5 Billion and made, I thought at the time, a correct decision to maintain the separate brands. But then he and his accountants decided to consolidate their supply chain, and have been gradually turning their Cabelas stores into Bass Pro replicas filled with lower end merchandise. The net is essentially to double floor space and footprint overhead, while reducing total customer base as more affluent buyers go on line. There are still plenty of good ol’boys eager to snap up eight dollar redhead shirts from Bangladesh - but the good Lord isn’t making as many new ones as he once did.

As I have said before more profit in soft goods. They would be even more profitable if they dumped camping too. There is just not enough mark up on firearms and ammo.

As far as Cabelas at least the one I shop at (Kyle), I have not seen much change. The floor space for hunting/shooting is still the same, at least the last time I was there. The fishing equipment did change to "Bass Pro" label from "Cabelas" label, but I am not sure of any real difference. Yes, Red Head merchandise is now in Cabalas and it may be from the third world, but what isn't. The Lacoste shirts that like to wear are no longer make in France. Just look at where Patagonia, North Face, Marmot, Orvis, etc. clothing is made. Yes, my Oxxford and Hickey-Freeman suits are still make in the USA but about everything else in the made in the cheapest labor market available.

I’ve never been into dicks, I know, before I get accused of being a non-progressive, White, straight male Christian that is full of hate and anger I’m talking about the sporting goods store, but I am all those things I suppose. I always found Dicks to be more like a Walmart type sporting goods store on steroids. Full of items that if you were going to put in a tough day in your 3000 dollar deer blind watching a sendero you would not die doing so. Cabelas on the other hand used to have the stuff that if you were hunting at 10k feet you could rely on. The league city store that I was so excited about has gone to a bunch of junk. Appears that the reloading section is almost going away. I guess I can keep hoping that a Sportsman’s warehouse will open up around here and at least I will have a place to go kill time and spend money. @Red Leg hit it on the head. I will spend my money at Midway or back home at Shedhorn Sports where they still cater to us.

Yes, many of the quality name brand things we used to buy and KNEW where they were made is not the case now. Many items are now made in China, Thailand, India, Vietnam, etc. Not necessarily a bad thing as the items are less expensive. I think it is a quality control issue that the name brand company’s inspectors must stay on top of. Most of the time the quality control is good, but not always. Being a cheap SOB, I don’t want to pay top dollar for an item misrepresented as being manufactured where it used to be in the U.S., Europe, etc., only to find out the item is now made in China or elsewhere, but the pricing is the same and the quality MAY be questionable.

Growing up in the 60's, I had an aunt who use to work for a garment company in Cincinnati.

The company was contracted by different companies, low and high end brand names.

She use to make fun of people who would only buy a specific brand, i.e. Arrow, Sears, don't remember all of them, but they were all made in her plant. The only difference was the label inside the shirt.

If a sleeve was a slight difference in length, collar a bit off center, etc. it got an off brand label.

If QC failed to catch a substandard shirt, pants, etc. and that item received a name brand label, that contracted would complain and do all sorts of QC inspections and nit pick future supplies for several weeks.

These foreign sweat shops have other penalties for employees who don't perform their skills properly.

Today's markets, people don't pay that much attention to the quality because companies are now conglomerates and figure people no matter what brand they sell will buy one of their labels.

Cabela's should have brought out Bass Pro or Bass Pro should, (won't happen), do away with Redhead and pick up Cabela's brand for better quality.

Dick's will soon be part of Walmart or go out of business. Either way the owners of Dick's will be laughing all the way to the bank with the sale or liquidation of the business.

I was just watching CBS News Sunday Morning. They had a segment on Dick’s stopping the sale of “assault rifles” and curtailing the sale of all firearms. There was also an interview of Michael Bloomberg. They did include a short interview with competitive shooter Dianna Muller for a pro gun perspective, but it was obviously just a token thrown in to say they show both sides.
Just another anti gun biased media indoctrination.
On the positive side, Dick’s CEO, Ed Stack admitted that they lost about $250M in sales and that the customers they lost are mad and won’t be coming back.
You are right Ed... This customer isn’t coming back.

I have never been in a Dick's and haven't been to Cabella's for some time. The nearest one is over an hour's drive. My Sportsman'a Warehouse is about 20 minutes drive and they are much more friendly. I shop there often enough that most of the sales people know me by name. They have a much better selection of stuff I want and the prices are much better (plus a military discount helps, too). The more I hear and read, I'm inclined to believe Cabella/Bass Pro are on a slippery slope and Dick's is a has been.

I smell a bankruptcy or sale to Bass Pro! Ha! Ha! Dicks’ bought Galyans, and it’s now being run into the ground as the yuppies shop online! Many firearms, ammunition and hunting shoppers used to actually go into the store to buy their items and probably other things while they were there. I know I used to. Hope their sales decline continues!
