JOHANNESBURG – Delays have been experienced at OR Tambo International Airport because of the rollout of the new biometric system to collect data on people arriving and leaving South Africa.

Reports on Friday said that delays at the Johannesburg airport were up to two hours long, although no reports have been received from the weekend. Chris Zweigenthal of the Airlines Association of Southern Africa said on Monday he believed members of the department of home affairs and Airports Company South Africa were to meet about the issue.

Delays were apparently predicted as South Africa fully introduces the technology to take the photos and fingerprints of passengers entering and leaving South Africa.

“There were always expectations of delays,” said Zweigental. “This is a learning-case situation.”

Apparently some of the biometric stations were taken offline and returned back to normal entry procedure over the weekend to relieve the flow of passenger traffic.

On Friday, OR Tambo International Airport said in a statement, “Passengers are advised that the Department of Home Affairs has changed over to the Biometric system. This may cause delays on International inbound and outbound passenger processing at the Immigration checkpoints. Passengers should be mindful of their connecting flight and adjust accordingly.”

In December home affairs minister Malusi Gigaba launched the pilot project on the capturing of biometrics at ports of entry and other issues of immigration. It was first launched at Lanseria in November and the following month at OR Tambo, King Shaka and Cape Town International Airports.

For the first registration, the department will capture all 10 fingers, and subsequent movements will require capturing of only one finger for verification purposes.

Gigaba said that by using biometrics, SA immigration is helping to prevent the use of fraudulent documents, protect visitors from identify theft and to stop criminals and immigration violators from entering the
country.

Thank you for letting me know this Wayne!

Oh that's gonna be lovely I can see!

Give it time for the bugs to get worked out. I'm not a super world traveler, but of the airports I've been to, OR Tambo may be my favorite!

We had something similar in Zambia for a while, they would capture fingerprints and capture images of your face when entering or exiting at passport control. It was a bit of a delay initially, but now its quick, don't even do the fingerprints anymore.
Every now and then you see someone travelling who has to spend an extra minute or two with the fingerprints, but not a real problem for a small airport.
I can imagine that Jhb would be a challenge as I have been there many times where I have waited an hour or so to get through passport control...

at joburg they have had warning signs about this leading to the immigration point for international transfers airside since last year, but even when i went through end of may they werent using it. so must have kicked in recently there. as pete says in zambia they have it, but at lusaka they only seem to make the odd person use the finger print scanner or get photos taken...........

I hope this procedure gets up to speed quickly. It sounds to me that there are going to be a lot of wasted time trying to link up with people from the Afton House and or Rifle Permits. Are they planning on finger printing everyone, or are they going to be doing a little "profiling" like the Israelis do?

I guess we will get some first hand reports in the next little while.

would have thought it would be same as usa where they finger print and photo everyone going in.......

?? Where have you seen that?o_O

Well they must be because I have never witnessed anyone being printed at any airport in the states, at least in the regular course of business in entering.

So to improve upon my ignorance, I googled this. It looks like since about 2013 they have been doing some high tech scanning for some folks entering the states, with I read some 28 countries exempted from it. If so, its about time! Gotta keep those Zambia guys out of here!!:eek::D:p

?? Where have you seen that?o_O

every time i arrive in the states all finger prints taken and a photo . maybe they dont do it for usa citizens , but everyone else does it at the immigration booth......PR lost her passport once in the states and now has to go to the back room every time she arrives....real pisser as one time she sat there at LA on arrival for over 4 hours........she was there 6 or 8 times in a 6 month period and even though you would think it would show on the computers, she had the great experience of having to got sit there for any time ranging from 45 mins to 4 hours............

Not for US folks, at least for now.:D As long as we don't get flagged for some reason. When we came back from Namibia in '07 my brother got hauled into the "office" for a conversation with the gendarmes because his ex wife still had a restraining order on him that was years old. Took him a half hour to talk his way into his own country! Not sure what they thought they would do with him, send him back to Africa maybe??:ROFLMAO: But according to the story I read, most Euro countries are exempt from this, so not everybody has to go thru this.

You get flagged you will pay the penalty for about five years on every entry.
Made a booboo once with a serial number on a rifle. For five years I got to go in the back room to have my firearms checked.
Stupid tax on my part.

Flying in to Joburg next Thursday ....will let you know how it goes.

The only thing that would concern me is the delays involved when on a tight transfer schedule.

with all this crap going on it looks like i might never go back,i thought just once more,oh well.
