Well, our gun season kicked off September 1rst, August 15th in the lower part of the state. Does legal September 15th.

Sat once before does were legal and saw 24 does and two fans. It’s been hot as hell here past couple of weeks, finally cooled a little.

My view this afternoon is a peanut field, acorns and wild grapes on the edges...

I usually pick a rifle for the season. This year I'm going with my 700 ADL in 25-06 loaded with Federal Premiums, topped with 117gr Nosler Partitions. The rifle is my age, born in 1973.

Where the “bean field” rifle was spawned. Good luck.

Looks like a fun start to the season. Today, the high temp was 83 in my neck of the woods. That’s about 10 degrees higher than my personal cutoff for deer hunting. It is usually well into October before I head for the woods. Good luck!

Well, saw three more does at about 230-240 yards, could've shot one but it was still pretty early. My buddy sitting in the next field saw 9 does right at dark.Going to go sit in the morning, seems like the deer here really move a day or so before a storm comes in.

Deer definitely have been nocturnal the past week and I'm pretty sure we're in Pre-rut now. Tons of dead deer on the sides of the roads around here this past week.

My dad had a 700 rem adl in .30-06. I put some money into it and worked up a load for it before handing it over to one of the nephews. Good to see another similar rifle still in use-good luck on the deer hunt, that should be some excellent venison!

Our rifle season doesn’t start until thinksgiving.
The 2 rifles I have read right now is a m2 77 in 6mm
And cz in 6.5g

Very nice stand sight pretty land.

I primarily bow hunted SC and man those deer are skittish.

Time to revive this thread...
Didn't hunt the first weekend in October, had to take a long weekend up in WNC and get away from all the beach traffic.
Amazing what a few days up in the mountains will do for you!

Our rut here in Coastal SC is in full swing now. Fortunately for me the current project I am managing is ten minutes from where I've hunted for the past ten years or so.

Last Thursday got in the stand right after work at shot this cowhorn at 5:30...

It was so early that I ended up sitting until dark, could've shot numerous does, I'll have a rendezvous with them in a couple of weeks.

As you can see, we have a bit of a cowhorn problem on that property.
I have shot a cowhorn every year for the past three years. My buddy that owns the place, one of his granddaughters shot one earlier in the season and he saw another one Saturday afternoon that he couldn't get a shot on.

We must have a very suave cowhorn that keeps getting to a few does every year. Nothing to look at but the backstraps, cube steak, burger and breakfast sausage will east just fine!!!

We also have numerous scrub cull bucks there that we need to thin out as well.
I'll get into that in the next post...

As I stated in the previous post, we are loaded with cull bucks. Got to the stand about thirty minutes before first light Saturday morning. Saw a large bodied deer at the edge of the field driving in, couldn't make out his antlers. Had a cull 4pt come within thirty yards of the stand right at first light, held off.

Watched seven does feed the edges up and down the field on peanuts and acorns. Down to the back of the field I saw a flash of antlers around 230-240 yards. Buck had chased a large doe into the woods, he popped back into the field and ran towards the stand and stopped quartaring at 125-130. Decided to let him have it. Forgot to mention that I switched up to my Sako 30-06 for this hunt.

Would've been a six but one of his brow tines was broken. So, he was stopped from breeding any does that morning.
Again, not much too look at but the backstraps, stew meat, burger and bulk Italian sausage will eat just fine!

I was hoping to get out to our property this weekend.. but currently the weather forecast is looking terrible (rain thursday, rain friday, thunderstorms saturday, possible rain sunday..)...

It will be a swamp out there.. and I really dont want to sleep in a tent (a big 8 person tent is how we're staying on the property this year... no good housing is available) with even the possibility of rain..

I feel for you.
Not too rub it in... we're looking at seven days of no rain, low humidity, overnight lows of high 40's to low 50's and daytime highs of high 60's low 70's.

SC. Where you hunt all your life for a buck of a lifetime in the 130’s. lol.
I have resorted to killing the only bucks I can. Culls.

Lol, yeah man. I have seen some nice bucks killed here, but I have shot wayyyy more does and scrub bucks.

I was thinking about it after I shot the cowhorn. I shot my first deer at 13, a 3pt in velvet. Im 51 now, that was the seventh cowhorn that I have shot in my time of deer hunting SC. I grew up hunting Allendale, Hampton, Colleton, Bamberg and Orangeburg counties. Now mostly Horry and Georgetown. The deer here have way smaller bodies than the previous mentioned counties as well.

This week and the next couple of weeks are magic time here. I plan on coming into work late a few mornings as well as some early afternoons. We'll see what happens. After that, put a few does in the freezer.

@Field28 - lucky you to live in a State with a September Rifle Season, Bucks still in bachelor groups and feeding patterns. NJ Bow opens 2nd Saturday in September and that’s good also. Good luck !!

Not to rub it in, but rifle opens up August 15th in the lower state counties.
I believe we are still the only state that you can shoot a buck in velvet with a rifle.

Where i am, primitive weapons opens August 15th, rifle September 1rst, Does September 15th. Season end is January 1rst, January 2nd if 01/01 falls on a Sunday. That is for private land, WMA's have different seasons.

The Right to hunt and fish is written into our State Constitution as well.

I have no idea the shipping cost from here to Costa Rica. I can do my research on shipping and get back with you later today.
