Hi, in a few weeks I am flying Qantas from Melbourne to Sydney with my Mauser 98 in .416 Rigby and ammo, staying overnight at the airport hotel in Sydney, and leaving the next morning for Johannesburg on Qantas. I presume as long as I keep the gun in the guncase with me in the room at all times this should not be a problem.

Last month a Border Force officer in Melbourne said I should declare the rifle to Border Force in Sydney, not Melbourne. I have the restricted goods permit all filled out and Riflepermits.com is taking care of the stuff in South Africa. I also have the Qantas dangerous goods permit for the ammo.

Does anyone know where the Border Force office is located in Sydney International Airport? I have not travelled to Sydney for a long time.

Thank you for any advice

Bloody hell these guys were hard to find. Best I can do for you.

I think that map is of the Arrivals area, not departures. Might pay to ring ABF and confirm location as well as procedures. If there any Sydney members, or members who have recently traveled to Africa via Sydney, they might be able to provide insight. Nothing worse than rocking up to the airport and being told we 'can't process that here'.

Qantas at Sydney airport may also be able to point you in the right direction. Make sure you leave plenty of time for being stuffed around.

Hi Sjakon,
The border force office is situated on the ground floor central of the international terminal.

It is. Noticed that. It appeared to be the only office on the map of the airport.. I'd certainly call.

@sjackon
When I went to book my guns in at the airport counter I was allowed to book my luggage in first then escorted to the federal Police/border force.
They were very helpful and courteous. Just checked serial numbers and locked it back up sell done. Spent longer talking hunting than the check went.

Thanks Bob
That is a huge relief

Thank you for the most helpful information.
I will write a report when I do my trip.
Really looking forward to a great adventure.
Best wishes to all

It is indeed the office on the map. It is in arrivals on the ground floor and cetral. After checking serial numbers and permits they will escort you upstairs to the check-in counter and then on to oversize baggage. Remember your export paperwork is also import paperwork on your return.
I fly home to Oz tomorrow after terrorising Marius over the last 4weeks

Mark, Thanks a lot for the confirmation. I will be seeing Marius in less than a month. That's a fine looking hippo in the picture . Gun Emporium in Tullamarine just told me I have 40 rounds of .416 Rigby waiting for me. Going to be a lot of fun

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
