Debate time: .308 vs .270

Trollin' Trollin', Trollin on a river.........

What and where are you hunting? What distances are involved? They both have their place. BTW did you ever ask "Jack O'Conner" that question?
The idea for this is question is if you had to chose between the two. Of course there will be more specific uses where one will do better than the other, but I am not talking about the specifics.

...tonight on .308 vs other favorite cartridges... Which do you prefer? Why?
I have spent many a night around the campfire back in the old days arguing this with a hiking/hunting buddy when we could escape from the ship. We never converted each other. He shot his 308 and I loved my 270. Another guy who often joined us split the difference -- he got a 444 Marlin. We razzed him unmercifully until he set a 3 inch pine tree a foot back off its stump and converted a jack rabbit to pink mist at about 100 yards. Ok, that works! I took my 270 (4 generations later) to Africa. Next trip I will take a single shot 7mm Rem Mag. 270 worked fine, but for my light caliber single shot, I decided go with the 7mm RM, more to quiet others that have no confidence in the 270. It's good on heavy sheep, too. The 308 seems to work just fine. Many 27 to 30 cal cartridges will get the job done. Shoot 'em if you got 'em!

Let me answer your question with a question. As it's equally as meaningful when suggesting which one is better. Blondes or brunettes?

Redheads, maybe??

270 for me. Over here the 270 is not fashionable so they are very cheap to buy. Also flatter shooting, very good for reds on the hill.

.270 for me

Both.... .270 was my “first”. After B.B. & Pellet gun. Smoked a shitload of nice animals. Got a .308 in AR.... bust a lot pigs with it too. Not a lot of difference in between to be honest with you.

it looks like the 270 won, with 4 votes 270, several undecided and 1 for redheads. So, lets now get to a real interesting and intriguing topic.....lets say, which is better, a 270 Win. ORRRRR a 30-06? I can't take credit for this topic though, as I believe it possibly may have been discussed once before. Then, next week, we can get serious, as our knowledge and skills grow, and we can debate over the 7mm-08 Rem. VS the 7x57. Possibly the 300 Win Mag VS the 300 WSM. Oh goodness, this could be so interesting, it feels like the night before Christmas!!!!

Give me my .270. There’s just something about a 130gr slug screaming downrange at over 3000fps.

I already have a debate going on .270 vs 30-06

well,

then you should love the 30-06, cause it will shoot 130 grain bullets over 3,200 fps!

I've shot my .270 since I was old enough to save and buy it at the ripe old age of 14. I'm closing in on 50 now, so 35 years of loading and shooting that gun. My vote is for the .270, though it really is only because of the emotional attachment.

Neither. Both are a bit too specialized and are not true all rounders.

There are better cartridges for African game.

.270 all day long.
The only advantage the .308 has over the cartridge it replaced is length of action and a slight decrease in weight over a 30-06. That matters if you are carrying a combat load 25 kicks a day, for hunting, not so much.
The .270 is a bit flatter shooting than the 30-06, shoots light varmit bullets better, and with heavy bullets for caliber can hang with the 30-06 up until you get past 200 grains for the 30-06.

This presupposes that in the new world, the standard by which every other cartridge is judged is the 30-06.

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
Here we are, the last day of the show in Denver, it's been a good show but expecting a quiet day today. I will be back for-sure to do this show next year and maybe also do the one in Sacramento California.

On Monday I will be hitting the road driving from Denver and eventually make it down to Atlanta for the flight home.

its going to be a good year!

Hi Rem280, Saw your post on getting selected for Idaho Elk. Do you have a zone(s) selected? I live in N Idaho, might be able to offer some ideas.

Cheers,

Craig
