Cyclone in Mozambique and Zimbabwe

Just checking in on all of our Moz and Zim members.. hopefully some will come online and let us know if all is ok and/or if they need any help..

It looks like a major cyclone hit and there has been massive flooding across the entire region..

One newsfeed reports massive power outages in South Africa as well due to not being able to get power imported from Moz.. Not sure how accurate that information is.. I've only seen that in 1 report so far...

Spoke with friends outside Beira a few days ago. They had moved themselves and most equipment to high ground. The camps in the Delta Coutadas likely took a beating. I suspect many of the recently released lions may be taking an unplanned tour of the Indian Ocean.

I'm sitting in the departure lounge in Dar as I'm typing this, heading to Lusaka via Nairobi, off to Kariba on Thursday/ Friday .
Have to be in Beira next week Tuesday.

Confirmed the power outages in parts of SA today with some people there.. Looks like things are pretty tough in the entire Southern Africa region right now..

Prayers to all those effected. We went through some major flooding during both Matthew and Florence so I have a whole new appreciation for the horrors that water can cause.

Dear All,


Thanks to those who have written in. I thought I would send out some photos to show some of our local water as a result of Cyclone Idai which hit us last week. In the Save Valley we had recorded 304 Mils ( just over 12 inches) in 36 hours. During that same period friends of ours in Mozambique recorded 500 mils of rain and in Chimanimani 620 mils. As a family we were blessed and most of the devastating stuff missed us miraculously. We will have a lot of road works to do but in general we were spared. There are many hundreds of thousands of people who weren’t (spared) though in Mozambique, Malawi and eastern Zimbabwe who will need you prayers. I will keep you all posted if we get any more rain but it looks as though she has died down finally.

12 inches of rain in 36 hours is a lot of water no matter where you are. I pray that the recovery is swift for the people impacted. If only the region had the numbers and capacity of hydroelectric generating lakes to store all that water.

I just watched a news video coming out of South Africa that was addressing Stage 4 load shedding which some are blaming on the tragic devastation of the cyclone in Mozambique. However, one man interviewed claimed that less than 10% of South Africa’s power was coming from Mozambique and that the shortages of electricity were really as a result of the well documented maintenance inefficiencies of the countries electric grid and generation systems. But the “Ministers” are claiming it is a result of the storm and not mismanagement!

I saw another item posted elsewhere which summed up the problem in some people’s mind

“Thanks for your message and yes Beira the main port and airport where are clients fly into from Johannesburg took the full force of Cyclone Idai. The airport is completely in ruins and is shut for now. But miraculously our camp wasn’t hit although the water levels in the swamps must be quiet high. And we heard that our new project with Cabelas ... www.24lions.org our lions and their cubs are OK. So its business as usual for us.

Obviously our thoughts and prayers are with the many people of Mozambique who have been affected tragically by the cyclone.

Thank you again for your thoughts.”

I have a friend that lives approximately 80 miles in land from the coast in Moz. The eye if the cyclone went directly over them. He estimates they received 24"-30" of rain over about 5 days along with very strong winds. All the local roads are washed out and most of the bridges. His family is fine they only lost one piece of roofing off the porch but the locals are totally devastated with most loosing everything.

Beira, still flooded and people on top of the roofs running out of water.
