There's a lot of chatter in the press about the COVID surge in Zimbabwe. This is scary because I'm planning to go there in late August. Not scary because I fear getting it...I'm vaccinated. Scary because Zim or the airlines (or both) might pause tourism...again.
So I checked the 7-day new case rate in Zim and divided it by their population . 418 avg cases per week / 15.1M = .00003
Then I checked the 7-day new case rate in St. Louis County where I live and divided it by the population. 56 avg cases per week / 979,500 = .00006
So over the last week, the infection rate in STLCO is TWICE the rate in Zimbabwe.
If my math is right...why the concern in Zim. I can tell you that the mood in St. Louis County is quite good. The fear is largely over and things are getting back to normal. Certainly no curfews, lock downs or business closures. Is the COVID situation in Zim highly localized?
