Can someone help me on what’s needed to convert a 30-06 to a 7X57? Is there a better caliber to convert than the 30-06
Thanks
Ed

Depending on what rifle, the mag well will be too long, the cutout in the receiver will be longer which could lead to issue, there could be feeding issues when the new barrel is screwed on due to the mag well. An 8x57 will be a straight barrel swap in most rifles, really need more info.

I don’t have a rifle to convert so looking for a doner that would be easiest calibers to convert.

What's the mission? Need to define that first. Then whether a short or long action would suit.

I should say I am looking at newer Winchester super grades to convert to 7x57

For that sort of investment and trouble, why not simply look for a 7x57?

I am sure you can find a post-64 Winchester Featherweight for under $1500 - probably for under $1200.

More than a few listed that aren't super grades but kill just as dead.

Super grade in '06 starting bid 1300. If you got it for that, with high quality barrel and gunsmithing, add another thousand.

Edit: Rebarrel and it's no longer a Super Grade.

Thanks for your inputs. Yes likely the best approach is just to buy one. I really didn’t want a push feed and Winchester made only a few of the control feed. They made a run for Cabelas and the Shot show in claw as a number of folks on here have them but they are like hens teeth. I missed out on one of those this morning which went for $3K. All my other hunting rifles are model 70 and I wanted a 7x57 to fit in with my 404,375 and 300 HH. I didn’t want another completecustom build so I thought possibly re barreling a super grade.

If I remember correctly....the 7x57 is the same case family as the 257 Roberts which is very different bolt head from a 30-06. This is one of the reasons for the 7mm-08 which uses the 308 win case which has the dame diameter as the 30-06 family (308 is just shorter)....
Anyway, as others have recommended, I suggest just purchasing a 7x57 and use your donor 30-06 for something else....

Thanks @Hunter4752001, I would guess that a good gunsmith could open extractor .002. The 30-06 length is 3.340-2.940 and the 7x57 is 3.203 this was my reasoning that this conversion might work. Certainly seems easier than my .375HH to 404Jeffery which works flawlessly. I will discuss with a professional before progressing.

Given that most bolt faces are designed with an amount of clearance, its quite likely that the 30-06 bolt face will handle 7x57 without modification. Is this for a rifle you already own? If so, try making up some dummy rounds from 7x57 unprimed brass fitted with projectiles and see how they fit the bolt face and whether they feed into the 30-06 chamber. Note: don't force them all they way in, the 7x57 has a slightly larger base diameter as well.

An noted above, you might be able to find a Ruger M77 in 7x57. I have one with the handy tang safety, and it has "the better" Ruger-made barrel (1991). Shoots lights out. Overall, a very nice utility-grade tool rifle. They can be had for under $1000 mildly used. This would save you a boat-load of frustration and you then have two great calibres: 30-06 and 7x57.

I ended up buying a Winchester Super Grade, one of the Cabelas builds in 2013. First day at the range went well. I shoot factory. All loads from 140-158 Hendershots loads are MOA or very close. Plan on it being my number one for deer and hogs. Maybe Africa since it is a classic. Somewhat rounds out my classic group, 404,375,300 and now 7x57

My .275 (7x57) Rigby worked beautifully with @spike.t on beautiful Takeri in Zambia (and he has a great offer going right now.) :E Angel:

Just wanted to say thanks for the excellent customer service. Ordered some 9.3x62 brass and the delivery was a little short. An email through your website Contact Us link was replied to the next day with the tracking info for the correction. Good pricing coupled with great customer service will see returning customers every time. Thanks again!

X5i scope is perfect - thanks for an easy transaction! Buy with confidence.
Made it to Augusta Georgia yesterday for a meeting, hunt bookings are looking good for 2026 and 2027, had a great time on our Alabama safari shot a rutting deer at 200 yards with 7mm PRC near Huntsville and then headed on to Butler Alabama and semi guided my first deer ever shot a very nice broken off 8 point with hunter there and spend a few days on 1100 acres hunting preserve awesome place!

I am righthanded, so not interested in the rifle, but I have a 375 RUM and 350 gr bullet loading data is very hard to come by. If you could reply with information regarding your loads I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Ray Boone, Leavenworth, WA
