*** Container Ship Ocean Travel ***

Thought this was interesting.

We had thought about Freighter travel a few years ago. Then Covid hit. It seemed like a good way to travel without a bunch kids running around and had many more unusual stops. Thanks for bring the idea back up, going to look into it again for all the same reasons as before.

Let me know how you get along. I personally like the idea of container ship or yacht for overseas travel, but don’t know if I would like the sea weather for an extended trip. It would be an adventure in itself.

It’s easy to romanticize about the good old days like TR, but the reality is that it is easier and probably cheaper to fly. Some aspects of the good old days may of not been that great.

I agree, the large cruise vessels certainly are more stable in any kind of weather/seas. It would most definitely be cheaper to fly in most cases.
Now a days I could only romanticize about those golden years of adventure...at my age I am looking for comfort with those adventure, such as they may be.

Not necessarily.
Cargo ships generally have lower center of gravity when compared to cruiser vessels.
To compensate for stability, pax vessels usually have stabilisation systems, and stability fins to provide stability at rough sea.

Moreover, combined ships - car carriers plus passenger, have the worst stability of all.
They are made with fewer watertight compartments to accommodate cars in a garage. This can lead to cargo (car movement) during rolling, or flooding of large compartments in case of water ingress.

Don't forget that Hurricane Season starts in Jun and goes into Nov. :ROFLMAO:

It’s important to realize it’s not always fair winds and following seas

I used luxury yacht charter seychelles for my Cousin Island trip. It is very convenient: you can choose a catamaran or a motor yacht, the crew includes a captain and assistants, so you do not need to worry about navigation. We stopped at Preslin, La Digue, and also on small uninhabited islands. The bays are really almost empty, the corals are beautiful, the water is clear. The yacht is equipped with everything you need: towels, snorkeling, sometimes even light snacks. You can choose the route as you wish. If you do not have experience, I advise you to take a captain - it is calmer and safer.

The power of nature is amazing!

You don't want to experience this in reality. Believe me.

Add to this engine blackout.
The ship pitches in high swell, in dark night. Sensor for oil level on the back of the engine casing, the oil rushes forward, engine stops on oil low level alarm being triggered off when the vessel hits the next wave.
In dark night, a white swell and spray washes over bridge. You dont see nothing ahead, except white spray, while ship's bow dives under the water. Green water over deck.
Air pressure in tanks on minimum, compressors run on maximum, and you dont know if next telegraph order on dead slow ahead will kick the engine alive. You pray to god. And then kick the engine. Helmsman on the wheel, manual steering, and give next order 20 to starboard, hoping you will meet the next wave under good angle. Life jackets of crew ready in corridors in living quarters, and documents wrapped up in plastic bag.

200 miles of new york.

Mark, the worst I’ve personally experienced was in the Sea of Okhotsk and Northern Atlantic. We were on a relatively small craft. I swore on both of those “pleasure” cruises that if we survived. When I left the Navy I was moving to Kansas.

Here's a photo of Tony receiving that Shaw & Hunter award at the 1970 annual EAPHA Dinner Dance. Tony Dyer, then EAPHA President and Princess (Sunny) von Auersperg presented it. I also attended the event.
