I have a sable hunt in June and was thinking of taking my Christenson Arms Modern Precision Rifle in 300 WSM because of the compactness of it when the stock is folded in a small pelican case for travel. Do you guys think it would cause any problems at the airports because of its slightly tactical look ?

I hunt with Chassis rifles in the US because that very reason. Compactness of a folding stock when hiking in or if windshield time is on the docket. They're also very easy to adjust LOP or comb height for bigger guys that don't want custom stocks or pieces "lego'd" together.

Never has US TSA say anything, doubt you will have issues with SAPS or any other being the bolt action will be recognized. May get more stares though...

I've cut down mag releases that are two long and actually prefer the T style that protrudes left and right as I've had objects hit the release more than once. I see no problem for use on plainsgame.

I'm sure a curmudgeon will be along shortly to school everyone on how Africa should only be hunted with timber & blued rifle, leather & canvas clothing/accessories...and wearing a pith helmet. :ROFLMAO:

Fact is that you should hunt with what you are most comfortable with...as long as it's legal. Plus I really have no room to talk because I own the ultimate LEGO rifle, the Blaser R8. Happy hunting.

One precaution. Talk to your outfitter, just to run the legalities by them because a collapsable stock can bring up some interesting questions. Other than that, you should be fine.

Back in my day, we didn’t bother with these plastic tinker toys! Hot blued and walnut worked long before dinosaur bones came into fashion.

Now back to my whiskey…and my nap.

And here we go! :ROFLMAO: :A Popcorn:

Legal or not, showing up at the firearms entry point with a rifle that looks different than what they’re used to seeing seems risky.

I'm happy for you to hunt with whatever configuration and/or calibre rings your bell. However don't assume that something that's legal in the US is legal at your destination or transit points. Get advise from both your outfitter and one of the gun permit companies. Most gun laws don't have any logical basis, so trying to apply common sense can get you in a whole lot of hot water.
p.s. You haven't said where in Africa you intend going, its a big continent with each country having it's own laws.

The folding stock is the only potential fly in the ointment that I can see. As suggested, I’d check w Henry at rifle permits.

Nah, it's just not going to look the part in the Safari photos,
Even Blaser takedown rifles can be had in Blued and Walnut.
Each to their own but i can't offer much support.

An FYI, I don't own a chassis rifle and a folding stock is prohibited in several states of Australia.

And here I was thinking the title read "Classic Rifle for Africa" :ROFLMAO: Boy was I surprised.

Other then being "slightly" uncomfortable on african stalks through thick bush, and "possible" legal issues regarding the folding stock. I dont see why people have an issue with stock vs chassis. The bullet (in this case a 30cal) is the same bullet exiting the rifle regardless of what the rifle is wearing (refering to srock vs chassis). Ultimately the barrell and action and caliber are the same. What its wearing is just personal preference.

Dear Sir, there wont be any problem bringing it into SA, please send me and email to henry@riflepermits.com - thank you!

Hi! It wouldn't be a problem getting it to S.A, I had a client earlier this season that had a very similar setup and he had no problems what so ever... Always good running it through Henry but it should be fine!! Happy hunting man!

Elton, it's just that, preference.

My preference is to use a traditional looking rifle to hunt. I want that classic look on an African hunt.

I'm not against chassis rifles as such. Then I'm not that into them either. But I might have a long range rifle set up that way one-day

Completely off the African topic, but i would love to see @Bob Nelson 35Whelen build a chassis 35whelen come to think about it.

That's a wrap, on our first hunt of this years season.

Hunting conditions are a bit tougher in South Africa during the month of February, but can be just as rewarding if done right.
