Am in camp with Johnny right now, shot my best buffalo ever today, huge hippo yesterday, stalked in on 6 elephant bulls today but no shooters, start checking leopard baits tomorrow, lots of fresh leopard sign, next month should be even better, lots of tall grass still , late rains, we are not in Chanjusi, north a couple concessions

Well not lately, but in 2018 and it was an awesome experience! Hunted with Strang Middleton in Chanjusi. Ridiculous amounts of hippo and croc. Elephant sightings everyday, lion and leopard around. Wild Africa, way off the beaten path!

Am hunting Tembwe and Kambombo concessions

Been awhile, but all those concessions strung up the Luangwa are big and offer lots of variety and opportunity. You should recognize this view from Chanjuzi camp. :) To me it says, "Africa!".

starting to get a little amped up...hunting aug 20th to sept 3rd ...what will the water and vegetation be like typically at that time?...bob

Was there in mid July. Lusaka was experiencing record cold at well below freezing. Pretty dry. Still very tall grass (10-15’) in some areas with seasonal burning in progress. So I’d think Aug-Sept much the same… But also depends on the rainy season went. Should be good weather. Cool, cold nights and warm-hot dry during the day. :)

that was a few years ago

From my previous posts about the general area/concession. May not apply to OP's question about current conditions. But I had a great hunt there with Abie. RIP Abie. Lots of buffalo coming and going out of the NPs and excellent bushbuck and puku. Good numbers of lions and leopards. Plus a couple of run ins with a nasty cow elephant. And a zillion tsetses :)

I think @eyedok and @cpr0312 will have the best info now.

Already did a couple of years ago. Spent a lot of time posting about that hunt with Abie du Plooy here on the forum. Also posted a bunch of photos.

Here's one of my favorite memories of that hunt.
A target bull at the corner of the 8x10 photo of my Zambia buffalo. I had worked up a 400 gr A-Frame load for my Win 70 in 416 Rem Mag. First day rifle check, Abie put a 2" orange target bull on a Mopane out at about 50 yards. I leaned over the hood of the cruiser. Shot once and the grin on Abie's face was priceless. Spent the next 11 days not only hunting but doing a ton of other stuff.

Chanjuzi Village kids. Had to be careful driving though the villages there as the kids really liked to chase the cruiser competing to get empty water battles. They use them for storing/protecting peanuts and other goodies. Stop and expect the "candy corps" :)

Also, on school days, common to give walking students a ride to school if we were heading that way. Common to pick up students walking to school in other countries also, not just Zambia.

Here's another view from Chanjuzi Camp. The Luangwa does have crocs! The cut banks can be steep. The warning to not get close to or fall in the river should be heeded! This one is big enough to be worthy of caution!

Massive Baobab in the concession just north of Chanjuzi- worth a visit if in area.

Lioness in the grass a few miles east of camp

Termite mound in the long grass. Most of the big grass areas are east of the woodland zone adjoining the Luangwa and east of camp. Farther east of the big grass areas and scrub mopane are some rolling hills of scrabble quartzite?

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
