Burris Veracity any good for Dangerous Game?

I recently sent a scope with a broken reticle to Burris optics. They are promptly returning a replacement. If I’m reading it correctly, they are returning a Burris veracity 2 x 10 x 42. I’m going to be using it on my 416 Rigby from anything from bear to Cape Buffalo one day. Do you think this is a suitable option with quick detach rings or should I sell it and buy a lower power, such as a one by four? Thanks in advance.

I'm not familiar with that scope but my main concern with close range scopes is what portion of the view is blocked out- the so called shadow. That is the portion of area that is clocked by the scope but not seen in the scope. If you look through the scope you can see around each side of it and you can see the center through the scope, but on each side there is space that you don't see. If you are using the scope for close range and dangerous game, it is best if this unseen portion of the landscape is minimized.

Personally I would not trust a Burris scope on a 22 let alone a 416 Rigby for dangerous game! I say if you have a 416 Rigby it is a fine weapon and worthy of a much better scope than a POS burris. At the minimum I would go Leupold better yet Swarovski on such a fine caliber.

I don't know anything about the Burris scope, but the 2x10 power is just fine for a buffalo .

Make dang sure it's on 2 though.

Agreed with the remarks above. I’ve always used Leupold scopes and I also have a Trijicon, my Leupold has never ever let me down not matter how far we’ve traveled together.

My only experience with a Burris has been a Fullfield II, and it’s been on a .30-06 and a .270 hunting whitetail. It’s been excellent for that.

Randy Wakeman did a review on the Burris Veracity 2x10 and seemed to like it a lot. Wakeman is one of the few writers that will call a bad gun, scope, etc a piece of junk, if it is. I love reading his reviews of shotguns because he's tough on all makes.

As far as power, 2-10x should be fine. I would prefer a low end closer to 1x.
As far as Burris scopes... They have a Dangerous Game Series(XTR 2). Quality of their low end scopes is questionable. I had purchased a Fullfield for a .243 that I seldom shoot. It was crap. Adjustments weren’t precise. Optics were poor.
On the plus side, Burris’ service is great. I had a red dot that had an issue. I sent it in and had a replacement in a week.
For the hunts you describe, I’d go with the “tried and true”. There is a plethora of info and stories on this forum about scopes “that work”. Leupold, Zeiss, Swarovski, Leica, S&B, Trijicon... to name a few.

If I were going to make the investment for a Cape Buffalo hunt, I would not trust that first critical shot to a Burris.

Nope.

1-6 is all you need and a plain reticle (duplex) or German post(my choice) is a better idea on a DG rifle than a complicated reticle with ranging etc.

Make sure you choose something that can stand up to the recoil and recoil velocity of the 416 Rigby.

I prefer the bottom one..

German No.4 Reticle with Illuminated Dot

Thick outer bars lead the eye to the centre finer cross, which has a tiny illuminated aiming point. The centre opening can be used to bracket a fast moving target for snap-shooting while the bold outer posts are easily visible against mottled shadow vegetation, even in poor light.

I have a number of Burris scopes from their 22 rim fire models which I love, to a 3-15 Veracity (which failed). Truth in reporting...a friend works at Burris, so I get them half price. In all fairness, at present I have a Leupold in for repair as well. I have now had B&L, Leupold, Burris, Weaver and Bushnell scopes fail. Burris has been the fastest turn around.
But for DG I would go no less than Leupold or Swarovski. QRs are very handy (I use them), but good glass is best!

Does anyone have any recommendations on a reasonably priced scope to practice with? Everyone jumps to Swarovski , but I don’t have Swarovski money right now. Lol. I was thinking maybe a recommendation on a decent Leopold that’s not at a VX 6 price point. (for that kind of money I would just buy a Swarovski) I would like to go ahead and start practicing with the set up and if the scope proved reliable, then maybe one day take it on a hunt. If not, maybe I will have Swarovski money by then. I like an illuminated reticle also, if possible. Also, I need enough mounting space for a CZ 550 in 416 Rigby.

VX5 1-5x, VX3 1-4x...I like the 5 because you can get an illuminated dot which my eye instinctively goes to. JMO
The VXR 1.24-4x illuminated might be a good choice as well, just not as good of optics, but since your looking at large animals not too far off it might do well.

My only experience with a Burris, was installing one on a friend´s .375HH, after one shot, the reticle was loose !

Burris is owned by Beretta. So is Steiner. Their U.S. offices are at the same address. Burris is made to a price point. Swarovski has been recommended. They are excellent scopes. I don’t see well through them. Before buying I would look through one cuz everyone’s eyes are different. I have more Leupold than any other brand, hard to argue against them if the glass suits your eyes. For higher end than Leupold, Meopta suits me well. I pretty much won’t buy a scope anymore if I can’t get it with a German #4.

The Leupold VX-R is illuminated, and in 1.25-4 or 2-7 it will take care of your needs for $500 from Cabelas. 30mm tube so you may have to find new rings but otherwise reasonably priced and known to take a beating.
