Press Release by Uganda Wildlife Authority

SPORT HUNTER KILLED BY BUFFALO IN KARENGA COMMUNITY WILDLIFE AREA
Kampala, February 4, 2025 – Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) deeply regrets to announce
the unfortunate passing of Mr. Frank Stuart Cox, an American sport hunter following a tragic
wildlife encounter in Karenga Community Wildlife Area (KCWA), which is located outside
Kidepo Valley National Park. The incident happened in the afternoon on February 3, 2025.
During a scheduled sport hunting expedition, a team consisting of Mr. Frank Stuart Cox, and
Mr. Trappe Mini Rudolf Francis, both American citizens, a UWA ranger, and a UPDF officer
encountered a group of five buffaloes. One buffalo was shot but retreated into a nearby
thicket. Upon being located again, it charged at the group, fatally goring Mr. Frank Stuart
Cox, and seriously injuring Mr. Trappe Mini Rudolf Francis The buffalo was subsequently
neutralized.
Emergency evacuation procedures were initiated immediately, and the victims were
transported to the Kidepo National Park airstrip for airlifting to Kampala. Unfortunately, Mr.
Frank Stuart Coxs succumbed to injuries before the aircraft arrived. Mr. Tappe was
successfully transported to Kampala for further medical attention.
The incident was reported to police in Karenga, and investigations are ongoing. The
deceased’s remains have been transferred to Mulago Hospital City Mortuary for post-mortem
examination.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and remain
committed to ensuring the highest safety standards in wildlife activities. We also wish Mr.
Trappe a swift recovery.
ENDS.

May he rest in peace.

Tragic incident. Prayers to both families.

That’s horrible, having trouble reading it but did it say what outfitter he was hunting with?

Just saw this press release from Uganda. All that I know.
Condolences to the family.
There is a reason it is classified as Dangerous Game hunting.
This is the reason.

Prayers sent for the families. Tragic.

Mom has been in hospice for cancer since August. I was at one time in my life a hospice nurse. Mom's wasting away to nothing, as many people with cancer do. Her dementia has been rapid onset over the last 6 weeks. At times, I'm her older brother (who died before she was born). "Where is Sgt Zim," she asks, looking right at me. "I'm here, Mom." "James, stop teasing me," she says back. "I hope I was a good sister to you." "Where are mother and Daddy? Don't we need to get ready for their funeral?" Mawmaw died in 1996, Pawpaw in 1987.

My prayers go out to the man's family, but my heart rejoices for a good death. Few enough of us will be lucky enough to shuffle off this coil doing something we love doing. Many of us will go out in some facsimile of how my mother is, recognizing few around them, soiling their Depends, barely ambulatory, alternating between despair and wrath.

God bless

+1

You guys' sympathy for my mother is appreciated, but that's not why I included it. Most of you have similar stories of loved ones. I consider going out like that to be the real tragedy.

Such sad news. Condolences to Mr Cox's family, and friends. My he Rest In Peace.

Best Wishes to Mr Frances for a speedy recover of his injuries sustained while on this hunt.

God bless him and his family and friends, who must be suffering beyond belief.

I will say, however, that if I had to choose the mode of my own death, I'd choose this one a million times over a prolonged illness, or God forbid passing after years of dementia. A relatively quick death while doing what I love would be my preferred way to go.

Instinctively, i've always been much more afraid of elephants than buffalo.
You often don't believe how dangerous these animals can be.
Terrible such an accident and terrible for the family.
Requiescat in pace mr. Cox.
But,a honorable death for a big game hunter. He wanted to kill the animal too.
Each of us should have this in mind when we set out on this stalk.
The wounded mr. Trappe, I hope he will be okay.
Is this a descendant of the famous female hunter from Tanzania in the days of Lettow Vorbeck?
Margarete Trappe. Does anyone know?

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
