Bowhunting in Tanzania

Hi folks,

I have lived in Tanzania for 10 years, returned there on several holidays and (hopefully) getting the chance to return there for a longer period. Because my dad is resident in Tanzania (been so for more than 35 years), he has a hunting license and we have hunted there quite a lot. I have started archery about half a year ago, and was wondering about bowhunting in Tanzania. Do you need a special license, any regulations or laws to know of, etc?

Bowhunting in Tanzania started during the 2005 hunting season when the government began issuing bow hunting permits. Bow hunting in Tanzania is very expensive because the license and government area fees for bow hunting are double that of those for rifle hunters. This country offers tremendous opportunities for bow hunters however few operators have the experience to conduct bowhunting safaris, so careful selection of the hunting outfitter is very important.

Tanzania does not have an additional bow qualification for professional hunters, however a professional hunter licensed by the Tanzanian Wildlife Division is required to be present during the hunt to guide and protect the hunting client.

Bowhunting big five and/or dangerous game, such as bowhunting Leopard, Lion, Cape Buffalo and Elephant is illegal in Tanzania.

Hi red,

i live in moshi and i have hunted its wild game quite alot but i have never gone bowhunting before.i think it wont need any extras (compared to rifle hunting) if you are going on a guided bowhunt, but i'm not very sure about its rules and regs because i have never tried it before but the only valuable help i can give for the present is to try and inquire on the A - Z of bowhunting in this country.

bow hunting is now allowed in Tanzania, but as explained by Jerome, it requires double the game fees to be paid for an animal killed with a bow. I do not like the policy as it furthers hurts our economy in relevance to the bow-hunting market, but there are a number of outfits who can handle bow hunting and i am one of them. Please let me know if there is anything else you would like to know.

As far as the opportunities - there are plenty and Tanzania has the potential of being a great bow-hunting destination (when our government wakes up to wisdom!). Thanks for all the reply's, but starting school after 5 months spending in Tanzania took some effort. So all I have to do to hunt in Tanzania is improve my skills, and find the time and money to return to that magnificant country.

My mzee (Bertus de Baar) started in Tanzania in '72, working for the Dutch governement, and has circled Northern Tanzania since. Mainly West-Kili (where I was raised) and Arusha. In holland he is from the province Zeeland...

Who is your father and what brought him to Tanzania, seeing that it is quite a small society they will probably know one and other.

i will ask my father-in-law, but am sure they know each other as he has also been in Tanzania since the 60's and worked for the 'water project' funded by the Dutch govt.
They are now based in Morogoro, but started out in the north (Shinyanga & Mwanza).
