Bob Nelson convinced me - 35 Whelen

@rdog
I may think that but at least I know the 243 is battling to penetrate a rotten tomato.
@CoElkHunter
A slow 25 and 35 will still be use

@CoElkHunter
SLOW 25s and 35s are used for the same game just a bit shorter distance.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
SLOW: .25-20, .25-35, .256 Win, .25 Rem (Auto-Loader), .25 Hornet, .25-36 Marlin
.35 Rem, .348 Win, .356 Win, .351 Win Self Loading, .35/.30-30, .350 Legend.
Don’t use these on scrub bulls, water buffalo or banteng unless your in a tree or can run real fast? LOL

If your hunting with Bob and can outrun him that's comforting.
Let Bob sort it out with the Whelen so he can continue to spruik the merits of the .35.

@CBH Australia
Chris nowdays I can't run far enough or fast enough to get out of sight on a dark night.
Don't worry mate we won't have any drama with the Whelen it will be one and done.
That way you won't have to run and your ballet slippers will be fine.

Glory be to the one chosen to raise this cartridge from the dead: Bob Whelen...I mean Townsend Nelson...whatever his name is... :A Stirring:

@CBH Australia no need to run mate just hold up a cardboard cutout of the one true disciple and the animal will tremble in fear of the incredible power of the handloaded to greatness, getting something for nothing, often touted and never out shouted...Whelen!

@Forrest Halley.
The Whelen was never dead it has always had a loyal following by those in the know and with knowledge and wisdom exceeding your own.
My son you may come into the light and bath in Whelen glory but unfortunately yourself, @CBH and @rdog will never be admitted to the height of Whelen enlightenment until you renounce the 243 and the evil it portrays as passing itself off as a hunting cartridge.
@rdog almost saw the enlightenment but succumbed to the wile ways and charms of Europe in the 9.3x62 and refuses to let go of the 243.
There's hope for you yet.
The hunting gods of your are seeking you out to become a truly enlightened hunter young @Forrest Halley.

Thank goodness for rubber boots. When the Whelenisms :A Shit: get deep...they wash right off.

The Whelen discussed in this thread has been packed in a gun case and will be heading to South Africa in a week. I'll be sure to post photos when I return.

Over the last 5 years or so I have bought several Sportsman 78 rifles to be used for donor actions. One has already been converted to a 280 Ackley Improved. The above rifle will be rebarrelled and restocked as a 35 Whelen. As you can see, I found a jug of Bob's favorite, CFE223. I have the brass and will buy more this morning. I found the appropriate bullets in an estate and the used dies at a gun store. The wood will be sent to Richards microfit and carved into the 102 classic style.View attachment 396422

I thought Bob would like to know I'm moving forward.View attachment 396423
Excellent choice of caliber. Bob gave you good info. It's the ballistic twin to the old 350 Rigby magnum. You can hunt 95% of the worlds game with it. enjoy.

Bob wasn’t wrong when he said if loaded to modern pressures, it can beat the .338 Win Mag in every category. { GASP }
Even at distances that the .338 Win Mag people claim the superior ballistic coefficients, the .35 Whelen can easily handle anything up to 500 yds.
For me, it’s a better up close game stopper.
There’s just something kinda magical that seems to happen with .35 caliber firearms and hunting or self defense pistols, as well.

I thought for a while Bob you let me down by not jumping me.
Yes I agree, to a certain extent, it’s not quite linear. However there is no replacement for displacement.
To say the 35 Whelen beats the 338 win in every category is false. It beats it in a few matches it in others, and loses a few as well.
I have great respect for both of these great big game cartridges, a man who owned one would have no use for the other.
I still have an 03 that will be a whelen someday.

@wyatt Smith
I have to agree with you to a certain extent as I remember a person from the forum that has both.
After reading of how the Whelen performs when loaded properly and confirming it for himself, his 338WM is now a safe queen.
The Whelen is now his go to rifle for everything.
Similar performance for both over sensible hunting ranges that game won't really tell the difference.
Bob

Hunting Gold, I can almost see the smile on your face as your 35 Whelen drops more and more animals. Can't wait to see the photos and read your report. Who knows, they may lead to our next convert. ;);)

@Shootist43
Art I see a lot more people on the forum trying the Whelen and liking it. I personally think the good ol Whelen is alive and doing well despite the naysayers and heathen 243 owners saying otherwise.
I think @hunting Gold will have his eyes opened when he uses it on game.
He has settled in the old 200gr Remington Core-Lokts for his hand loads. A few may scoff at his choice but fail to realise that Remington beefed these up for use in the 350 rem mag for game including moose.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR MY RIFLE, ALWAYS APPROACH A NEW LOAD CAUTIOUSLY!!*
Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}
Peterson .280AI brass, CCI 200 primers, 56.5gr of 4831SC, 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
