What are the best choices of factory ammo for 458 Win Mag for taking bear and moose sized game?

I'm considering using Federals 400 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw. Any others?

Thoughts?

Barnes TSX FB 450 grain and Swift A-Frame 500 grain should have you covered for moose and brown bear with no problem.

I have a couple boxes of the Barnes but can't seem to find any Swift in stock. I'm trying to err on the "lighter" end of 458 so I assumed the 500s might be a big much for a 1000lb moose.

A 458 caliber toasted marshmallow will take a moose I believe…

I’m going to guess there are no bad choices for the win mag in North America :D

HAHA yeah I'm not too worried about being under gunned, moreso finding the ideal lighter load that has some somewhat decent ballistics.

Lighter and faster doesn't equate to better in this case. IMO the 458WM is a great dedicated buffalo, elephant, rhino and hippo caliber, but a bit of overkill for NA.

If I were going for moose and/or brown bear it would be a 375H&H in a 300 grain Barnes TSX at ~2400 fps.

I'll be bringing the 375 as well but I'm hoping to hunt with both.

Buy the cheapest Remington or Winchester soft-points that you can find (Gunbroker.com or at a local gunshow)

Sight-in your rifle with them, then you are "good to go" for moose.

99+++% of the time, it doesn't even matter if the cartridges are 50 years old, as long as they appear to be in good condition and don't show signs of corrosion or the boxes don't show signs of ever being wet.

No sense in buying "premium" modern ammo in .458 Win Mag to shoot a moose. Inexpensive, expanding bullets is all you will need.

I just ordered some Winchester 458 ammo for fairly cheap. I'll see how those go.

I also wasn't aware that Remington ever offered 458 WinMag cartridges. I wonder why both Winchester and Remington has ceased production? You'd think those two offerings would be the most economical choices.

The picture attached below here, shows an acquaintance of mine and the huge bull moose he bagged in Sept 2016, Alaska.
He used exactly the same Federal brand, 400 grain Bear Claw bullet ammunition, that you were considering in your original post.
His rifle is a Ruger Model #1, single shot but I do not recall what scope, (if any), that he has on it.
He lives in another part of the state and so, I’ve ever seen the rifle.
He had only described his 2016 hunt and mentioned both the specific rifle and ammunition.

His critter was within 150 paces or less distant and trotting either left to right or right to left, as the story went.
Upon receiving the bullet through both lungs, he dropped and expired quickly so, no follow up shot was fired.
I do not recall if the bullet exited or was found in the carcass.
However, I suspect that it exited the far side ribs.

Personally, I’ve never shot anything except inanimate targets with the .458 Winchester.
That said, I found this cartridge much more pleasant of recoil with 400 grain bullets (including the Federal 400 gr Bear Claw ones) than it is with the more standard 500 and 510 grainers.
The 400 gr bullets are typically leaving the muzzle at perhaps 300 fps faster than the heavy, traditional bullets are.
And, I found that they shot flat enough to make hitting a 2 foot wide steel gong, at 300 meters quite easy, without having to aim at the sky and drop them in, mortar style.

Exactly! I just returned from Africa last night and used my 375 H&H with Barnes 300 gr TSX hand loads at 2475 fps. It performed flawlessly on my Cape Buffalo and Crocodile. Retrieved the bullets from the Cape buffalo and both were just as they should be, four petals rolled back against the base.

I've been trying to determine effective hunting ranges for the various loads given their ballistics. Would you take that same 300m shot on an animal with that 400 grain load?

300-400 grain - 300m?

450 grain - 200m?

500 grain - 100m and under?

Remington stopped in 1997. Winchester stopped in 2010.

I would not shoot an unwounded animal beyond about 200 paces with any .458 Winchester caliber ammunition, no matter what bullet weight.
I don’t have a .458 Winchester these days but now I have a .458 Lott.
Likewise, I would not fire upon an unwounded animal with any .458 Lott ammunition, no matter what bullet weight.
To further answer your question, the best way for any person to determine their own distance limitations with any rifle, is for them to train quite often with it, firing live ammunition at targets, set at various distances.

Thanks for the advise. I'm basically treating my 458 WinMag as suited for hunting the same distances I would with my 45-70, 150m and In. Knowing I have the option to push it to 200m is a bonus.

So far I can consistently ring my 10inch AR500 plate at 100m with all loads using irons. I'm going to start stretching that distance out next weekend.

If you need, I’ve got a few boxes of each Remington Safari Grade loaded 450gr A-Frames, Federal 510gr Soft Points, Federal 500gr A-Frames, Hornady 500gr DGX and DGS. There might be some Federal TBBC and Woodleighs in the garage too but I’d have to look. PM if you’re interested
