One of my favorite rifles Mod 70 in 416

I've been thinking about buying a Model 70 for some time now. It seems like it's a rifle every serious hunter should have the pleasure of owning. Just need to figure out what caliber I need (want).

the 416 Rem is a great caliber and I find the rifle the most well balanced of the 3 x M70's ( 375/416 and 458 ) , @matt85 shoots a 300g Barnes in his rifle.

i enjoyed the article but i think his load data at the end is a bit too hot. i see no reason to run a 400gr bullet at 2500fps with this cartridge or with any 416 cartridge for that matter. a 400gr bullet at 2200-2300fps will do a fine job on anything that walks the earth. the 450/400 NE 3" only gets 2050fps with a 400gr bullet and no one questions that fine old cartridge.

i do like those 300gr Barnes in the 416 RM. at a modest 2650fps i found them to be extremely lethal on game.

@matt85 , correct me if I am wrong please but the way that I interpret the article with regards to speed is that the 400g bullet slows down by approx. 260 fps over 100m ?

therefore a 416 bullet with a mv of 2300fps will have an approximate speed of 2000fps/2050 fps when striking the target at 100m ?

is this correct and what are your thoughts of that ?

Model 70 is a true icon. As for 416 rem, the best 416 option (barring obscene wildcats). Complete the package with decent glass and mounts and you will be geared for anything on the planet. As for velocity, my 416 runs at 2280 fps with 400gr using our local South African propellant.

sounds about right, according to the hornady ballistic calculator a 400gr bullet with a muzzle velocity of 2300fps will impact the animal with roughly 2030fps at 100 yards (so probably 2000fps at 100m).

I've got one and love it! Lighter weight than the 375 as it is the same other than a bigger hole down the barrel. So easier to carry, well balanced, and very deadly. Took my first buff and elephant with it;)

I like the rifle and caliber too, it was a easy choice to buy one for sure! For the money, my rifle is a super value!
