I’ve got a Ruger M77 RSM in 458 Lott. I like the rifle but the stock is a hog. Has anyone had theirs slimmed up? I’m looking for some examples/pictures. It has that piece of metal in the forearm to act as the recoil lug as well as a couple escutcheons, so that might limit how much it can be slimmed.

RJ Renner said he has modified the RSM’s before but didn’t have any pictures to share. Has anyone here had an RSM modified by him? His mods certainly look very nice on other rifles.

Thanks in advance.

I'm in the process of slimming down a 375 cz550 stock. I've taken a good 5/16" off of the width which will require reworking of the recoil lugs in the action area, but I took the bottom of the forend down just far enough that I won't have to modify that lug. I removed all of the checkering as well which slimmed down the wrist. Maybe the same is possible with the RSM? Shouldn't be too big of a deal though.

I would think a proficient stock man could slim down, checker and finish a RSM factory stock with relative ease. The problem is the good ones have a considerable backlog and quality work doesn't come cheap (if cost is a concern).

The first guy I'd reach out to would be Craig Libhart of Susquehanna Stockworks. Excellent workmanship, right across the river from me and one of the nicest fellas you'll meet. Last I knew, he was moving towards semi-retirement but was still taking on smaller projects.

@Mac Baren, I live central to city of Cincinnati. I have work travel early this week but could hopefully meet later this week (with no schedule changes). What area of town are you working/staying in?
Kind regards
Ron
