ALL SET ... Director of parks and wildlife in the ministry of environment Colgar Sikopo pictured alongside Miss Namibia 2017 Suné January and French artist Gé Pellini at the anti-poaching campaign launch in Windhoek yesterday.

THE Hunters United Against Poaching group yesterday launched an initiative in Windhoek to raise funds for the fight against poaching in the country.

The HUAP is a group made up of the Namibian Big Game Hunters organisation, who decided it was time to stand up and be counted in the fight against poaching in Namibia. They boast two top officials from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism in their team.

The HUAP fundraising initiative involves the sculpturing of a life-sized rhino from a marble block by world-renowned French artist Ge Pellini which will be auctioned at a gala dinner in Windhoek on 31 August.

Pellini stands for “less is more” verity, and keeps on preserving and refining his creative works.

His diverse variations on the theme of the horned animal sustain his current research and projects. He thus deliberately enlarges the horn, draws more flexible lines, and eliminates the details. Since inception in 2015, HUAP has held fundraising activities in support of the country's anti-poaching efforts.

“From here on, it falls into the hands of fellow Namibian people to join us on the evening of 31 August where this marble treasure, sculpted by world-renowed artist Pellini will be auctioned off, and find a permanent home with someone who carries the same vision,” said president of the HUAP, Danene van der Westhuyzen.

Proceeds from the auction will be managed by members of the trust, which comprises representatives of the Namibian Professional Hunting Association (Napha) and the environment and tourism ministry as well as an independent legal practitioner, a statement from the organisers said.

Napha will also raise funds for the Rebeus Fund to provide financial assistance to professional hunters, hunting assistants, trackers, drivers and skinners who are injured during the course of their duties.

The environment ministry applauded the efforts of the anti-poaching group.

Director of parks and wildlife Colgar Sikopo, who attended the launch on behalf of minister Pohamba Shifeta, said he was pleased with the initiative by the hunters.

“Our poaching efforts are hampered by a number of factors, and one of them is a lack of financial resources, making this event crucial for the conservation of wildlife,” he noted.

Sikopo also reminded Namibians that the fight against poaching is not for government to fight alone, but that “this fight is for the people of this nation, and should be fought from all fronts by everybody in this country.”

I totally agree, the more awareness to poaching and people getting involved the better. I especially applaud Miss Namibia Sune` January for standing up with the Hunters group.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.
