Another newbie

Have read this great forum in the past, but finally joined.

Been to Africa twice, but didn't have the opportunity to hunt. (Egypt and Kenya Masai Mara) Mostly hunted pheasants and pigs in California for 30 years, and deer in Wyoming for the last 3 years. Saving my pennies for an African hunt, but finances and family health issues (not mine) keep bumping it back.

Been a member of SCI about 7 years and have attended the last 6 conventions. Met a few of you in the Eye Candy bar the other night. Thanks very much for the warm welcome and the prompt to get off my rear and onto the forum.

Although my knowledge is limited at this point, I hope to be able to contribute soon. Most of all, I hope to meet some of you next year on a hunt.

Aside from the huge diversity and large numbers/availability of game in Africa, quite a bit of the bush in South Africa will totally remind you of Central / Northern California's Coast Range and/or the foot hills of the Sierra Nevada Range.
Much of Namibia will remind you strongly of Northern Nevada, up around Winnemucca, etc.

You're already trained-up for most of the hunting in Africa by having hunted wild pigs in CA.
They use the same tactics in Africa for most of the so called "plains game" species, with the exception of shooting over sticks, instead of from sitting down and resting your elbows on your knees as we did when I lived in CA (born/raised in LA, but have lived in Sacramento, Chico, Gridley, Colusa, before moving to Anchorage 33 tears ago).

Likewise, you must get on your rifle swiftly, settle on the vital spot immediately and fire an accurate shot within a very few seconds of having spotted your animal, because unlike black tail deer, mule deer and sometimes feral hogs, most species of African game will bolt very soon after you see them.

Probably part of the reason for this is that there are many types of predators in Africa and one type or another is always "on duty", they have it covered 24-7 and the game is hyper-alert.
But, there is so much game that, if one gives you the slip, you will soon find another.

As long as you do your homework on what defines a proper African outfit, and don't book with one that seems "too good to be true", you will not be sorry when you finally book your first trip to Africa.
