“My way or the highway” is an expression that suggests the listener either conform, or be excluded. Animal rights groups have added a menacing element to this saying — “my way, or we firebomb your store.”

The headline of a recent story in The Telegraph News warns of violent animal rights activists:

Butchers 'living in fear' as vegan attacks on the rise, says countryside alliance

Marlow Butchers in Ashford, Kent (UK) was targeted by animal rights activists who smeared red paint on the doors and windows of the store. The graffiti said, “stop killing animals” and “go vegan.” The logo of the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) was also painted on the storefront.

Although ALF’s most notorious attacks are against medical testing laboratories, farmers and butcher shops, they promote a very anti-hunting agenda.

When answering a question about hunting for food, the ALF website gives this as an answer:“Did the fact that Jeffrey Dahmer ate his victims justify his crimes? What is done with a corpse after its murder doesn’t lessen the victim’s suffering.”

Threats of violence and even death threats against hunters, butchers and farmers have been stoked by social media and promoted by international groups of activists.

"The internet is the worst thing as not only are they threatening to physically destroy our business, but they are also trying to ruin our reputation online, too, by leaving negative reviews and comments,” said Wayne Marlow, a co-owner of the butcher shop in the Telegraph News.

Marlow continued, "They want to close us down and people are threatening to smash the windows or petrol bomb the store. We live in fear and we’re up worrying at night — they are terrorising us."

In testimony before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, FBI Assistant Director John E. Lewis said, “During the past several years, however, special interest extremism, as characterized by the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), and related extremists, has emerged as a serious domestic terrorist threat.”

Lewis continued, “Law enforcement only becomes involved when the volatile talk of these groups transgresses into unlawful action. The FBI estimates that the ALF/ELF and related groups have committed more than 1,100 criminal acts in the United States since 1976, resulting in damages conservatively estimated at approximately $110 million.” (Figures through 2004.)
