Can you travel to Africa with ammo of 2 different calibers in the same ammo crate
300 and 338

Yes if you are taking two rifles in your name for those calibers.

It shouldn’t be a problem, but it needs to be in a locked case capable of traveling as independent luggage. If you have any internal flights in Africa or possibly on the way home from Johannesburg it’s likely you’ll be made to check it separately. Something like a small pelican or SKB case is best. I’m not sure how many cases would fit that reloading box.

Watch the weight limit as well

100 rounds of 300 and 338 and the box may weigh more then what I believe is the 5 kg weight limit

Is that ammo weight only, or ammo and case?
Technically it’s ammo only, but it’s a better practice to treat it as ammo+case+locks under 5 kg/11 lbs. 5kg is international regulation. It’s difficult arguing with certain individuals in Africa if they say it’s ammo and case together. 5kg gives plenty ammo for any regular hunt.

Yea, you don't want to be standing there arguing with someone who can make your life a living hell over something that you could of prevented.

Welcome aboard.

Agree with the above information but I would not want to take 100 rounds of ammo between 2 calibers. To me, that seems excessive even if both rifles are used without one being a back-up. Space the rounds out and use foam to fill the space between each caliber and lock it up.

You might need 2-3 rounds of each caliber to check zero. If you hunt plains game and take 10 trophies using 3 rounds of ammo to dispatch each of them then have consumed 36 rounds of ammo between 2 calibers. I am not doubting anyone’s shooting ability only looking at worst case round counts. I do understand the potential to have a scope bumped and may need additional rounds so we bump the total to 40 rounds or 2 boxes of ammo, each caliber. The 5kg/11# of ammo should be of no concern.

Personally, I have not taken more than 2 boxes of each caliber gun I take. I admit I have only been on 2x 8-day safaris and taken 6 trophies on one of the safaris.

All food for thought

Welcome to the family!

I just saw Budsgunshop.com has both the guide gun and the African for $1150. FWIW - I bought both and decided to use the Guide gun - I restocked it in a Bell and Carlson stock and I added the Alaska arms floor plate to add a round. I wanted the shorter barrel as I will use a suppressor. I wont go lower than $1100, but I will ship it and no sales tax.

Let me know if you are interested
