Hunted
Australia and now South Africa
So my son is at Uni and said he needs to do an essay on African Hunting both for and against.
My first response was I haven’t been yet ask mum if I can go sooner!

While I can’t explain the attraction for myself I’ve always been drawn to hunting, firearms and the bush.

He is licensed and has shot since he could safely handle firearms. I explained to him that there are many benefits that come from the hunting industry and that he can maybe take the angle of it being an industry. Kangaroo harvesting in Australia is an industry creating a chain of employment opportunities.

African hunting is an industry and perhaps using land and wildlife as a form of industry as opposed to traditional farming. Farming is to feed the masses. Hunt harvested animals in Africa are used to feed the community. Much the way that indigenous cultures have shared with the community throughout time.

The Hunting industry in Africa has a kinetic effect that has economic and social benefits for the community, the general population and the country.

I mentioned employment and the roles of camp staff and the custom of tipping and that that is how staff supplement their low income.

There is a lot of African Safari operators that make a direct contribution back to the community by donating to schools or orphanages. One project that I can name is the upliftment project run by Game4Africa. The operator that I booked my first safari with.

Another point I raised is that humans are hunters and gatherers. I’m not getting on the podium saying that humans have absolute right but we evolved to what we are and we developed the tools and skills to do what we do whether that is build a house farm a crop or animal or hunt it with purpose. Something that I just thought of was that people don’t protest against an animal doing what comes naturally to provide for off spring and survive.

Can anyone add to the positive reasons why hunters hunt? I know there are studies showing the economic benefits from shooters pursuing their chosen recreational activity in Australia.

All over the world thought all history hunting has saves species. From the Kings of England and heir game parks to Texas ranchers today with extinct and endangered animals thriving on hunting ranches we have so much of a story to tell.
The US devastated their wildlife through commercial hunting 100+ years ago. We even caused extinctions like the passenger pigeon. Then we put in place sport hunting that gave animals more value than just for meat. We set rules for harvesting and ethics and now we are overrun with game!
I raise Addax antelope in Texas which by some accounts are functionally extinct. Private ownership like is practiced in RSA has had an incredible positive impact on wildlife. RSA went from 1M head of game in the 50’s to now over 25m.
There is much more and many papers have been written on this subject. I was immersed in it the last few years as Trophy the film rolled out. F your son hasn’t seen it tell him to look it up online.
Best of luck
Philip

CBH, have your son take a look at the "Scholarly" articles recently posted to AH re. the role hunting plays for the local communities and the conservation of wild life. They contain a lot of quotable information. To bring things a little closer to home he might include the non indigenous species of game and or animals now thriving in Australia that were brought there by hunters.

My search for Schorlarly did not return anything. Does anyone know what these threads are?

You might point out this thread to him if he needs to do some research on the topic. As I recall, there is some material in here that he might find pertinent. There are also other threads on the subject in the AH archives he can find. Since it was a current event not long ago, he might find the topic interesting.

All the best.

Read up on the fate of Kenya's wildlife when they stopped hunting.

Some of the Ivan Carter interviews and published info are well worth a read.

Thanks Brickburn for posting the links to the articles to which I was referring. Your computer skills are way above mine.

If the young scholar would like to do some digging within those links he can find plenty of further sources of fodder for his paper. (Not doing all the work :) )

Thanks all, I have emailed him a link to this thread this morning it’s nearly midnight here, he has been told to go through it.
I read some parts of threads myself.

Good luck to him.

I have been using a "Personal Property" rider on my State Farm homeowner's policy to cover guns when I travel with them.
I have several firearms, but only one is worth over $20K (A Heym double rifle).
Very interested.
Would firearms be covered for damage, as well as, complete loss?
I'll can let the State Farm rider cover my watches...

trperk1, I bought the Kimber Caprivi 375 back in an earlier post. You attached a target with an impressive three rounds touching 100 yards. I took the 2x10 VX5 off and put a VX6 HD Gen 2 1x6x24 Duplex Firedot on the rifle. It's definitely a shooter curious what loads you used for the group. Loving this rifle so fun to shoot. Africa 2026 Mozambique. Buff and PG. Any info appreciated.
