I was recently in Zimbabwe on a photo safari, where I met a guide whose rifle is not operational, Thus, he is not presently able to lead walking safaris in the bush. As luck would have it, I have a .338 in my safe that would be perfect for his needs. Is someone able to advise as to the steps required to send my rifle and a couple boxes of ammo to my friend in Zimbabwe, as a gift?

Thanks.

A .338 is not good enough for the walking safaris. He needs a .375 at the minimum. Final exam for a walking guide is to approach and shoot an elephant cow full frontal at 10 meters.

A .338 is not legal or sufficient to stop a charging elephant.

I am sure you can sell the .338 and send him the funds for a proper rifle to be purchased in Zimbabwe if that is what you wish. Would be a lot simpler as well.

Tanks is correct .375H&H is the minimum legal caliber.
Even if your rifle met the legal requirements you would need a export permit from the USA. Which I believe is difficult to obtain. The guide would need to apply for a import permit. Due to a problem involving Zim Central firearms import permits were not being issued, that may have been rectified.
Shipping would be a whole different problem. If the rifle was received in Zim the rifle and ammunition would be taxed at 40 % ofretail value. The average used .375H&H sells for about $2,000.00 to $3,000.00.

Since he has his guides license he knows he was penalized if he used less than .40 caliber and really should be using something heavier.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
